Here's an old one, circa 1990. I spent a lot of time racing and cruising on this boat. My dad bought this Viking 33 in 1976, raced it extensively around Ottawa and Lake Ontario, and cruised down to the West Indies and back.

This was my favourite position to steer from. There was a Danforth anchor lashed to stern rail which created a surprisingly comfortable back rest.

This is pretty much how I remember my dad; this was in the BVIs, about 30 years ago.

May 4th 2017 8:24AM. A Thursday morning. Fog. Visibility 100-150 yards.
The fishing boat in the foreground had just hit my boat.

He came out of the fog doing 25 plus mph. The sailboat in the background is Leslie Troyer’s Mahalo.

After the collision he chased down the boat and herded the fisherman back to the scene of the crime.

Nearly did. Les said as he approached the guy, he yelled out “Did I hit you?” Les replied “No, my friend who’s dead in the water back there!”

No wonder he was going so fast, just look at the way that boat is built. He'll go through another boat before hiking himself.

NICE! Mark,
She's a real beauty. Looks built for small boat ocean sailing and live aboard, judging by the amount of cabin to cockpit and the liferaft rack.

This would date back to about '75 or '76. My first boat, bought with paper route income. That's me walking the boat away from shore and a cousin aboard. It was probably the next year I added a little bowsprit and a home-made jib (sewing courtesy Mom). This boat had a centerboard, rather than a daggerboard.

The Admiral and I making about 4.5 knots upwind on Matagorda Bay. 1978 Sunbird 16' that was my first "real" sailboat. I bought the boat in 1981. But when this picture was taken in 2004, I had upgraded GirlFriend 3.0 to Wife 2.0 about a year before. She is still afraid to get into the water as there are things in the water that "CAN EAT YOU!"

Always makes me wonder if radar deters or increases the risk of collisions in poor visibility.

Last summer we were almost struck by a small tuna harpooner boat in dense fog off of Cape Neddick. That guy, alone in his strange craft, appeared to be racing erratically around following his FISHFINDER screen. I was watching him on my radar screen (he was otherwise invisible) and when he abruptly turned toward us I blew my airhorn and he throttled down and then loomed out of the fog about 50 feet off my port side. He is going to kill somebody.

It's a known and studied phenomenon that feelings of security such that safety equipment, like seatbelts, helmets, etc., provide, increase reckless behavior. Thinking you can see with radar in the fog makes a captain feel safe traveling at clear day speeds.

Same thing happened to my Dad and I. We were in an open motorboat, steering by compass in a heavy fog, leaving Buttermilk Bay and entering the Cape Cod Canal. A 25' fishing boat came out of the fog on our starboard beam and crossed the channel in front of us. He was on plane in 3' of water, and headed into the shallows on our port side. Just past the shallows was the berth of the Kennedy, the training ship for the Mass Maritime Academy. We waited to hear the crash, but then broke out of the fog into the clear, and there was the fishing boat, bobbing in the water alongside the ship. Darn.
