Looking at the 14.6 or 170. We have a black lab who use to enjoy my power boat. Have any of you owners taken your dogs on board? I should have restated my question. How does the boat like the dog. Scatches from paws etc..

Go for it

We've taken our Siberian Husky out on a Hobie Cat and she loved it (I think), so I say go for it. It may be a challenge to keep a lab out of the water and in the boat with the boats with the open transom like those though!

Labs and boats.

If the dog likes boats, he'll like any type of boat. To keep him out of the water, use life line netting across the open transom.

Dogs

My friend and Hunter 170 owner sails with his dog on a regular basis and I have not seen any damage to the boat from this. Hey Rusty....it was good seeing you Labor Day weekend. What a great lake. Thanks again.

Hunter 170 -
Newf and the 170

My Newfoundland loves to sail. Geo found out earlier this year what happens when we push off and "Sailor" is not in the boat! He will bark and whine until you dock. Always the first one in. Also likes the 2 person Kayak! Provides great ballast in the front seat. As for the boat, the material must be harder than the claws as there are no scratches from his paws. If I am on the water, he is with me. Also Geo, I am sorry that I have not sent you a message off line. I am glad that you enjoyed the lake for the Holiday. It was kinda fun when we had all the boats out there Sunday (?) afternoon. Heading up there in a few minutes to ensure that all is in order. Gotta do that over lunch now and again. Coming back next year I hope? Rusty

For those that have seen the Small Craft Advisory issue #16, you would see Sir Winston on the cover. He is the Skipper on my h-170. Danny

You have to know how to get the dog back in

If they ever take a dive into the water, you need to be prepared on how to get them back onto the boat. Especially if you don't have a low swim step close to the water level. A sail cat is ok because it is small and you can easily pick them up out of the water. A sail dog is a different matter. A large wet dog is not so easy since there is no handle on them to pick them up. Get a PFD for your dog. They usually have a handle on the back so you can pick them up, or tie the handle to a line connected to a block hanging from the boom. You need to keep them safe, just like a person.

*yksHolly Crap is that a BIG dog. And I thought my 80lb lab was big. What do you feed that thing, small children??? I do have a PDF for the dog with 2 straps on it. The gene for making dogs swim was left out on this one. She'll sink like a rock.

Hello Rusty

No need to apologize. I hope you find everything in order at the lake. Yes it was fun having 4-5 boats in the water at the same time. We are indeed coming back next year. We have reserved the last week of June and also hope to come back up for the Labor Day weekend. If I can get away with it, I may even come up next month for a solo Friday / Saturday over night. The motel in Westfield off 39 would work out okay for this. Take care.
