My husband and I have recently bought a hunter 40 in hopes of ocean sailing. We have a carrin terrier who is six years old. Can anyone tell me if dogs get sea sick ? How do people handle the dogs bathroom needs ? If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate them.

See Forum Archives and . . . .

"Dogs Onboard" currently on the "Ask All Sailors" forum. Speaking for my two, a fifteen year old Schnauzer and a six-month old Wire, no, they do not get seasick. We have been out in heavy weather but try to keep it to four hours or less. Once, with engine problems, we were out for seven hours and the Wire "held it". Both dogs loved(Schnauzer is in doggy heaven) being on the boat. We use a PFD and a long leash, both ALL the time.

..Broke in the new puppy 'Sailor' using the puppy pads and now take them everywhere. But, he's 10 lbs. only. Still, for long passages, it's nice knowing he's not uncomfortable. He did get sick once. We have friends with a cat that gets sick everytime they first leave the harbor, but most don't get ill frequently. RD

Before taking a dog on an extended cruise...

Dogs need exercise...and you won't have a yard for him to play in, or a neighborhood to walk him in. So how's he gonna get any?

Hunter 40 general interest

You might find the following site interesting... It's about a family sailing around the world in a 1986 Hunter 40. www.TeamToucan.com

Dog on the boat.......

We have an 11 lb. Bichon Frise and he loves the boat (Hunter 240). It helped that we "broke" him into the boat as a puppy. I would suggest that you definitely by a PFD. We bought the Fido Float off the Internet and it's great. It has a handle that you can lift the dog up without hurting the dog at all. Make sure you always have a line attached to the PFD and make sure it's plenty long. He has never gotten sick, and taking him out entails bringing him in the dink to the shore.

The dog loves the walks on the beach just as much as the wife does.......

But Michael...what if the nearest beach is

1000 miles away? Dogs on weekend, or even an occasional weeklong, cruises are one thing...but when somebody starts talking about extended blue water cruising with a dog, I can't help but wonder how healthy that is for the dog.

Point Taken Peggie....

I agree with your assertions regarding the "open ocean" stuff. Since we sail the 240, the open ocean sailing isn't an option for us!! Your points are very valid.

And see "Sailnet".

Today's article(02/07) is entitled "Canine's on Board". Good reading for someone contemplating sailing with their pet. See www.sailnet.com

Dogs at sea

Plenty of people that hang around the docks have dogs on their boats. If you are only going to travel a few hours and use your boat as a summer cottage the dog will just hold it and be fine. On weekend trips in the bay, our dog was very insistent on going to shore instead of on deck on the artificial turf pads we used for the purpose. How do you feel about dinghy trips to shore at 3AM? Offshore with rough seas, high winds, and green seas over the deck, a couple will have their hands full. There will be times you need to do things other than cater to the dog. Are you willing to risk your lives to rescue a canine that falls overboard at night in a storm? David
