...as to why a recently opened SoCal lake does not permit any HUMANS or human's PETS in the water... among other things. Obviously, someone has been reading the latest on human encroachment on all things 'natural' (such as this thing...) Rick D.

As far as I'm concerned...

90% of this thread--at least my contributions to it anyway--has been strictly tongue in cheek. :) I can understand banning outboard motors...even boats that can discharge oily bilges--but DOGS? Where do they think the ducks, geese and mammal wildlife go??? And what do they think the difference is? However, most things are settled by compromising...and apparently that was a compromise the majority was willing to accept. But SHEESH! :)

Limnology (and Common Sense) Agree w/Peggy

One of the first "lessons" in my graduate school limnology class was that it's probably safe to drink the water 5 miles downstream from where a turd was dropped in.........but not if 250,000 were dropped in! Concentration and volume do make a difference! (Sorry, but in most cases one "solution to pollution is dilution".) So on one hand, limiting the amount of dog poop (or any other poop) in the water is just plain smart. Then there's the other hand...... Lots of animal waste is deposited in the water naturally, and lots more un-naturally. Limit it when you can and when you can't, don't lose sleep about it. As for training a mutt where to go, I had a girlfriend who's Yorkie came sailing with us, so I kept it in the cockpit until it finally urinated then I washed it out the scuppers. When the time came for it to poop - same process. The dog had imprinted the cockpit as being the place to go, and I had no compunction with washing it overboard. (Didn't happend often, anyway!) Eventually, I solved the problem completely - broke up with her, and now don't have to take a Yorkie sailing! Michael O'

Michael, Girl friends are a lot easier to get rid

of than a dog. I would never be able to. :) Get rid of the dog, that is.

Off the soap box

Well back to the actual topic here which is to generate the waste in the first place, not where to dispose of it. I got my dog, ( 2yr old Lab ) to go by accident the first time but after that he doesn't seem to mind to much, he probably holds it for longer than he normally would but not not that much longer. The answer here is Cheese, as it works as a laxitive for dogs. Just go sailing, bring your poop pad, or astro turf or what have you and feed your dog lots of cheese snacks. This will be messy the first time but after the dog gets over the initial hesitation to go on the boat it shouldn't be too much of a problem although hitting the target pad is still questionable.

Put a piece of sod on the bow.

I have heard this has worked for others. Either sod or better yet artificial turg.
