We bought an American Cocker Spanial last summer and she is now full grown. I want to take her along on our day sails, but have no experience with pups on board. I would appreciate any sage wisdom that this forum could impart so that wee Abby can join the Vice Admiral, kids and me on board for an afternoon of sailing our 22 foot Mac Venture Thanks Richard

dog

I have a Yorkie onboard our boat. I taught her to use pee pads from the pet store.I did this from day one so that I would not have to worry about putting her in a dingy to go ashore for a pottie break. Depending on the size of the dog I was trying to train her in a litter box but they were all to big for her to step into.If she is in the cockpit I have a lock lease on her for her protection and she can walk around slightly. I walk her all over the boat so that she can get her sealegs while under sail.In port I let her run on deck and play with her.she now has NO FEAR of the feel under her feet. good luck, Peggysue

something to BARK about again

Richard, PeggySue has some good advice. so go ahead and give it a try. The dog can be trained for a litter box, wiz pads do work after you teach the dog to use them and even a small piece of indoor/outdoor carpet will work. When you feed or water the animal hang on for about 30 minutes. Take the dog to the prescented carpet, whiz pad or whatever you are using and let the dog do it's business. When the dog finishes praise the animal..do this action with the animal over and over until the animal knows what to do. It's no big thing ...it's just housbreaking the dog on a boat. Just take your time with the animal , if it messes up correct the dog and if it performs the task correctly praise the animal. It will take some time just keep an eye on the dog and it will work out and don't forget about a PFD for the critter they need us to protect them you know. I'm outta here K9piper

It's not my boat, it's theirs

Myer and Woody, my two mini dachshunds, would never talk to me again if I went sailing without them. In fact, although I make the payments, they let me know it's not my boat, it's theirs. Once I start packing my bag, loading the cooler, etc. they KNOW it's time to go sailing.
