We need advice...about a PFD for a dog - not just any dog but a Basset Hound, who is very short, very long, and very heavy at 70 lb, most of which is in the chest area. Anyone got any advice? Thanks Jule & Carl s/v Syzygy

A little help, maybe.

Our Wire-haired Terrier is only 20 pounds. But the PFD's at BoatUS and West Marine all had recommended weights. They do make them for your dog's weight. We always use it with Ginger but also have her tied to the helm with a long leash. She likes to stand on the companionway hatch and pretend she is captain. This coming season I plan to test the PFD in my daughter's pool, if she will allow me. :)

Got on for my Lab

Hey - you can get 'em at West Marine. There are three sizes, and if the store personnel are nice, they'll let you bring the dog right in. Really cheap too - about 16 bucks. Hope this helps! Rob communications@austin.rr.com

Don't hesitate

After buying the boat, we had a bit of hesitation on spending. Well, Joli, our springer spaniel, managed to jump for the dock while on a short leash, splash. It was to West Marine (there are other venders)and the first add-on for the boat was his PFD. Next weekend he backed off the dock. It was obvious treading water was a lot easier and lifting him out was much easier due to the strap. Do be careful about using the leash clip if your hound is an escape artist. With some resistance he might be able to wiggle out of the PFD.

Good point Andy.

Our dog has wiggled out of the PFD when the leash was attached to it. We then bought a harness and clip the leash to it instead of the PFD or the collar. The harness does not interfere with the PFD. Which, to answer Tom's question, is a Personal Flotation Device. And also to Tom, can you turn off the CAPS on your PC? All CAPS(uppercase) is very annoying, the equivalent of shouting online.

Tiny Dog PDF

Our dog, General Jay, is a long haired miniature dachshund and weighs less than 8 lps. He loves the water and is great on our 12' catamaran, but we haven't taken him on our O'Day 27 yet because we can't find a PDF to fit his long, tiny body. We're not too concerned about the catamaran, because we only use it in protected waters and he can climb back onboard by himself. Does anyone have suggestions where to find or how to make a PDF for him? Thanks, JimC

We Have Had Luck

We have three dogs on board our Catalina 42'. We had the PFD's from West Marine and found them to be less than robust and wouldn't trust our dogs' lives to them. We found a company who makes a very good PFD for dogs. The company is called Ruffwear. We bought them in California from a store called Marin Outdoors. I would think Ruffwear and/or Marin Outdoors would have a web site to order. They are, as are all quality products, a bit more expensive but I am sure your dog is worth the peace of mind.

ditto rob from austin.my golden retreiver has a catalina 30 that he lets me pay for and occasionally sail.we went to the local west marine and he let me buy him a "puppy pfd". he doesnt leave the dock w/o it. it has a d ring attached to it and you can attach a halyard to it and winch the dog aboard. have fun, sailor sam
