I have a Hunter 30 and a growing (still!!!) black Lab puppy now (about 70lb). Sailing will be new to him next summer and I never had a dog on a boat either. How do you substitute for a back yard and a grass to respond to the nature call when at sea or on the hook? Q#2: I bought this boat in Florida just a couple months ago and although she came with all Hunter manuals, the previous owner made many "convenience" upgrades that I am having difficulty figuring out. (example: the shore power battery charger / inverter comes on when you turn On the refrigiration switch.) I can't get the macerator / bilge pump to work, and some others. Does any one know the previous owner of a 1991 Hunter 30 "Schatzi" from Punta Gorda, FL ? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Happy New Year to all sailing nuts (just like me) Thank you

Macerator pumps have a tendency to

freeze up if not used,(centrifugal types, not diaphram) and usually have a screw slot on the shaft so you can break it free. Make sure it's getting power also. Also check the breakers at panel. Put at least a harness on your dog so you have a way to grab him from the top if he goes overboard (voice of experience).

Andre: We also have a 60 lab mix that loves to go with us. She can hold "it" for an entire weekend. It's amazing when we take her ashore to do her business she refuses to go, but as soon as she gets home she runs into the back yard and does the deed. We bought a doggy PFD which is a necessity. Dogs and more dogs

While hiding out from Huricane Ivan in Curacao, Dutch Caribbean we ran across a 27 foot sailboat with 7 LAREGE dogs onboard. It was an amazing sight. Then while in the Los Aves the same boat pulled up and anchored. We watched hime take his dinghy overloaded with dogs and rowed in to shore (couple of times). He would run the dogs and let them do their business before going back to the boat. If 7 can be done 1 shouldn't be to bad. But I am not an dog expert, we have cats!

Labs should be very water-savy dogs, but if it strays over the gunwale, you might invest in some lifeline netting. Looks very salty and comes in handy when heeling. Also consider the problem of getting a large, wet, thrashing dog back on board. A harness or dog PFD might provide a lifting point.

Its great when you can get shore, but my solution for two small (10lb) dogs while underway all day and overnight is a piece of indoor-outdoor carpeting about 3' by 3' square. When I think its time for business, I lay it down and they know that is their spot. I've tied a line to the corner, so when they are done, the carpet goes overboard for some rinsing. The key to training my dogs was outlasting them. The first few times they didn't go all day. I was a wreck. Definitely a PFD for the dog. Mine aren't allowed out of the cockpit, and wear one whenever they are out of the cabin and the boat is moving. Good luck!

Doggy Business

I've got FOUR dogs. (It takes me longer to get ready to mow, than to actually mow the lawn!) Only one of them is my "boat dog", and she's a small dog (A dachshund/lab mix - yes technically it is possible!) The best way to get them used to doing it on the boat, is to make a spot on the boat as similar as possible as the spot at home. Then, training, training, training. Get a sheet of that green plastic grass-like carpet about 2 ft square. Put the sheet in the favorite spot in the backyard at home. Praise her when she does it on the green carpet at home enough times so that the dog gets the idea this is right. Then put the sheet on the boat (alway be sure to put it in the same place aboard), and go out on the boat overnight (It may take longer than that to get to where the dog can't hold it any longer). She will likely try to hold it till you get off the boat, but keep drawing her attention to the carpet. Eventually she will go somewhere aboard, likley on the carpet if she's familiar with that as an OK place. If she doesn't go on the carpet, then your task is similar what you did to housebreak him/her and get her to go outdoors in the first place. But when she does it once in teh right place, and see's you're happy about that, then most of the work is over. A female is easier to train than male, since she won't need a vertical structure to lift the leg against. (Like the mast or a stanchion.) Good luck, it's a difficult job of repetitive training, unless you're on the boat A LOT! Then you've got to decide what you're going to do with "it" while you're at anchor. Wash it overboard? (Hope you're not planning to swim today.) Or bag it up and drop it off ashore? Peter

Convenience Upgrades

In March I bought a boat similar to yours re upgrades. What I discovered was that lots of the electical upgrades were not wired where normal things were wired, thus making me think they were not working. For example, he added four Hella fans...they were wired to three different electical breakers on the panel, none said fan or anything similar. Try turning all switches on (on the electical panel), then see what works and what does not.

You have cockpit drains, no? My greyhound (92 lbs., all muscle) learned to forego the carpet and now just goes there. Bucket full of salt water, good dog have a cookie, and no problem. Took him some time to feel comfortable, thus the carpet scrap, but they're smarter than you think once they're rewarded (bribed) a few times. I would come to some reasonable conclusion about how to keep the lab out of the wster, though. I never have, which is why I don't have a lab Great breed, but hauling them aboard could be a project, especially because they may not want to.
