Does anybody have any suggustions on how to get your dog from the boat to the dink (and from the dink to the boat) without capsizing the dink or lossing the dog. I have a Hunter 35.5. I read an article in the archives about a guide dog being able to climb the latter but not sure my dog(Sam) a golden retriever could do this since the latter is hard for me to climb up. I always have a PFD on her and could tie a line to her on exit and entry so as to not lose her, but there has got to be a tried and true method to do this, i hope. I'm not even sure if she should go into the dink first or should I? Thanks, Rob and SAM

Hard Dink?

Rob: One solution is to get a smaller dog <haha>. Your boat should make boarding and deboarding easy enough for the dog with the platform on the stern. I suppose that you have a hard dink so that is your biggest problem. Our schnauzer jumps from the dink (inflatable) to the dock and back without any problems. I would think that your dog should be able to get from the stern platform to the dink and back without too much problem too. One of my friends added teak treads to the boarding ladder for his dalmation on his H'31. I guess the dog does better than we humans!

Soft dink

The dink is an inflatable. An Avon 9'. last week I was getting in alone to move the dink to a dock to take it out and I flipped it getting in, first time I've ever done that, but, dawned on me how is the dog going to do this balancing act. Thanks again, Rob

You know that your dog is............

a lot more agile than you and I. I think you may be suprised how well he/she can do this type of manuver. Our little (standard) schnauzer goes up and down the companionway in a leap and a step (no problem). If the dog has not tried this yet, you may be suprised.

Great, absolutly great

Thank you, I have a feeling that is exactly how it will happen becaue i have to push my girlfriends big(but cute) ass up the transon to get her out of the dink, and she usually knoks my beer out of the dink, sometime i make her get it back though. Rob

Basset Hound

Hi, Rob! Bruce's derscription was great! We have a Basset Hound and getting him into and out of the dinghy is always an adventure. We have an open transom on the boat (340) with swim platform, which helps; HOW photo of the 35.5 shows that it does too. Fortunately, Basset's are highly food-motivated. To get "Lazy" into the dinghy, we throw in a dog treat, and in he goes! To get him from the dinghy into the boat, we tie up at the transom, throw a dog treat into the cockpit, and in he goes! Shameless bribery work wonders on most species (homo sapiens included). But if we forget to carry dog treats.....oh, dear! Carl and Jule s/v 'Syzygy'

Use a lifting davit

I had an outboard lifting davit installed at the starboard side of the transome on our 410. It's used (primarily) for removing the motor. But, it can be used to put our labrador into the soft dink. Now all we have to do is to get the dog to enjoy the boat. All he does is to anchor himself in one spot and shake the entire time he's aboard. Not to mention all the dog hair that is left for me to clean up. And to think that we named the boat after a dog that is supposed to be a water-loving dog! John Richard s/v Jack's Place
