Isn't the Hunter 170 a sexy looking little boat? I think it's looks are way ahead of other day sailors of like size. It looks good even on the trailer.

Amen!

Amen, Jerry! My wife and I were out sailing this past weekend, and on the way home (we trailersail on a lake 30 minutes from our house) we stopped at the quickie mart. As I was leaving the store with slurpie in hand, I caught a glimpse of that 'rump' pirched there on the trailer- what a great looking boat, even from the rear. The open transom and the slopes of her lines just draw the eye in. Looks like a Melges 24 from that angle--the cut of the stern is almost identical. Nice (fast) company to be in! It's a fast, fast design! Kudos to you for bringing this subject to the forum. Because I was thinking it at the ramp too when a couple walked by and the woman commented, "PRETTY boat!" I get compliments every single time I sail! Flying Scots, Lightnings and the rest (albeit slightly larger) have NOTHING on the 170's "lines", beauty and power. Mike G. -s/v Lil Sport Alachua, FL

Thanks Mike

I'm sure the other boats have their groupies too, but the 170's lines are such a departure from traditional daysailors. It has lines like a Porsche... you just can't stop looking at it. I'm jealous of you because it's too cold here to sail. So all I can do for now is cuddle with it in the shop.

I hear ya

Jerry, Man, I hear ya on the 'too cold/ice on the lake/no sailing for now' thing. I used to live in Fargo, ND, and would wait all winter for that first summer sail (at my parents' lake house over in Walker, MN). I still make it up there for several days each August, where we sail the family Laser. But my cousin's place is just around the corner and he just bought a 170 last year! --and to raise the freaky quotiant, he bought it without knowing I'd just bought one-- and of course I had no ideas of his designs on a 170 either! Good times sailing up north. The breeze is more reliable in MI and MN during the summer than inland FL, at any rate- the intercoastal usually has consistent, powerful breezes. Best regards for the rest of the (hopefully short) winter. Mike

What is a the top of your shrouds?

Mr. Hartzell, I remember reading many of your posts over the past year or so and if I remember correctly, you have made many upgrades to your boat. What is the "square" looking thing on your mast at the point that the shrouds meet the hounds? Also, I think that you had mentioned adding a boomkicker. Did you ever get this done, and if so, were the results worth the cost? Thanks for the information. By the way...the boat looks great!!!!!! Rusty

Hunter 170 Panic Stricken
Top of the Shroud.

Hi Rusty Good to hear from you. The square looking thing flying at the top of the shrouds is simply a Jolly Roger pirate flag......, just for fun. About the Boom-Kicker, I think that this was one of the best things that I have done. The concept is incredibly simple and works very well. I also changed the vang to a 8:1 cascading vang with a fiddler/becket/cam block. Those two changes gave me the greatest addition to sail control of anything else that I have done. Sailing Obsession is carrying the Boom-Kicker. http://www.sailing-obsession.com/index.html Danny Hartzell

Thanks

Danny, Thanks for the response. The boomkicker may need to be one of this years alterations. Appreciate the help. Thanks for the information. Rusty

Breaking traditions

Yes, the Hunter 170 catches your eye and has broken away from the traditional style of the day sail boat of the 1950's 1960's . The first Huther day sail boat that I saw was a 146 same style as the 170 only smaller. The 170 is often referred to as the "big brother" of the 146. The 170 is a great boat for a first time owner, simple to rig, handle and pretty much maintenance free. We even have a Hunter Day Sailor Association of Southern California ( H.D.A.S.C.) that we started, I think most of the boats are 170's, how ever, if it can be trailered or car top your welcome to join H.D.A.S.C. you can find out more information by going to Sailing Obsession .com (Dennis McLeroy)
