Does this look right?

looked at a potential boat. I don't think the owner uses her much. I took a few pictures and was looking at the fuler. Shouldn't it be attached to the deck to keep the drum stationary as you furl?

Bob,

If you notice, the attachment strap wraps down & is bolted 3 to 4 connections to the bow. There should be an internal nose reinforcement inside for support. Looking at the cut-away on the nose top to allow the strap support to bend down, this was the original design. In addition, the fiberglass is structurally stronger & thicker at the nose. Your decktop fiberglass thickness is much thinner

The drum has the base unit stationary allowing the drum to turn independently. My boat has a machined coupler bottom part that attaches to the furler frame which stays stationary. Although my furler is a different brand & you have a single line furler, the concept remains the same.

My 1980 C30 has a similar setup pal.

The drum turns. The chrome basket stays stationery. Check the underside to see if its attached. Nice clean bow. I like the anchor retention loop. I may have to see if I can add that feature.

Angle of the bowstem plate and the forestay are different, creating a 'kink' in the rigging that the toggle is trying to correct. Scary.

The furler is correct. Look to see if there is a fresh water flush hole on the drum. Really just about a quarter inch open where you can flush the bearings with fresh water every so often. The early models didn't have the flush and the bearings can eventually seize up and you would need to replace the drum. The company is down in Fall River so it would be a short trip and about $140 to get the new drum. I had to do this on my 310.

Relative to Jackdaw's comment, I understand his concern but every Catalina since the mid 1990s has this exact same design and I am not aware of any reported failures at this arrangement. I will reach out to some people at Catalina and see if they are aware of any failures.

P.S. that looks to be a bow from a C310, are you thinking of joining the club?

Jesse,
No it's a 34. She is lightly used but pretty much factory. Not much in electronics. I liked her a lot but needs a good cleaning. We're actively looking. Hope you are enjoying living the dream. I was following your Spot until it stopped somewhere in Puerto Rico!

Cool. The 34 is a great sailing boat. Hope it works out.

The Spot is a major disappointment. Should have gone with the InReach. Uses batteries too quick and there is no rechargeable option. Plus the coverage started dropping out in the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

The only thing I can think is that it may be better to shim the pin/ space inside the toggle with washers at the connection of the chainplate and toggle to reduce movement over time and point loading.

Is it all tall rig boat? The extra mast height might explain why the bowstem tang does not point directly at the masttop. It looks like it points lower. An amazing oversight if true.
