My H30 still has the original 12hp Yanmar engine and transmission. When I purchased the boat, it had a 3 blade 12 x 9 LH prop. I have always thought it odd that the shift lever in the cockpit was backwards. For forward, you pulled the lever towards the stern and for reverse, you pushed the lever forward. Since then, I have replaced the old pitted 3 blade with a 2 blade 12 x 10 LH. And by the way, I actually have slightly better performance, probably due to the fact that the 2 blade is new and smooth. My question is, do all Hunters of this era have LH props, and do they all have backwards shift levers? It seems to me that the transmission is just forward or reverse, and the gear ratio is the same in both directions. Hence, one could put either a LH or a RH prop on as long as the shift lever condition was of no consequence.

I know when my dad put new engines in a 35' twin screw, he had to find reverse-rotation and standard rotation engine parts, because his transmissions were not deisgned for full reverse

Just because the shift lever is backwards...
doesn't mean that the transmission is working opposite. It depends on how they mounted the linkage assembly on the trasmission. If the lever on the transmission moves forward, toward the engine, while the boat is going ahead, then the trans is in it's proper forward rotation.

No you have your linkage reversed.
Maybe the PO preffered it that way but that is not the standart.

David: I am not sure that that was the original linkage. I have been aboard a few H'30's of that era and they shifted UP and DOWN with the lever in the middle of the compass housing (Edson). This setup made mounting some of the wheel pilots difficult because of the clearange between the wheel and shift lever. I am sure that some other Hunter 30 owners will pipe in here about their boats.

On my 1982 H30
the shift lever is located on the port side of the pedestal. To shift into forward gear, you push the lever forward, and to shift into reverse, you pull the lever back. I have no idea if this is the original transmission, but it is the original 12HP Yanmar engine. I do have a three-blade prop, not sure what the specs are. I try not to use reverse gear, except to slow down coming into my slip, as there is very little steering capability in reverse.

Interesting...my 1982 H30 also has
the shift lever in the middle of the (Edison) pedestal below the compass housing. UP is forward and DOWN is reverse. The prop is a two blade. I don't know if it is original, but in reverse, the prop-walk is to port and steering control is limited.

...UP is reverse and DOWN is forward. A bit counter-intuitive in my opinion and obviously still causing me some confusion in my second year of ownership. I have the original Yanmar engine, but I'm not certain about the transmission. I do know that the previous owner replaced the prop shaft and maybe the prop too after an unfortunate encounter with an anchor line.
