i am looking at a c25 to buy. it needs a bottom coat...or does it?? it had a barrier coat done in 1996(?), and it has no blisters visible. it seems to have some algae or old paint over the barrier coat, but the barrier coat looks good. would it be OK to put the boat in the water without a bottom coat? or should i go ahead and paint it? thanks for the help

Bottom Paint

mjewell: Whether to paint trailer boat bottoms depends mainly on where and how long it will be in the water. If you plan to leave it docked for weeks in a rich fresh water lake, probably need to to keep algae off. If same in salt water, I would surely want bottom paint. If in a pristine lake like our Fremont Lake, you can leave it in all summer without any problem without bottom paint. If only occasionally in the water for weekends and the like and mostly parked on trailer the rest of the time, it probably needs none regardless of boatable water quality. Dick

all summer water

i plan to leave the boat in from mid-march through mid-november...sounds like i ought to go ahead and paint it. ay recommendations on what type of paint to use? i have looked around and probably would go with a soft biocidal that wears away...does that sound right. btw, lake perry, ks is a typical midwest lake. algae grows on dock pontoons, rocks, etc. to a green fuzz by late in the summer. mike

Petit Hydrocoat

I just pulled my C-22 out of Melvern Lake (south of Topeka off of hsy 75) and checked out my bottom. This is my second season with Petit Hydrocoat. I can see that I will get one more season out of it. I also only keep my boat in the water ~7 months out of the year. This paint is suppose to be good for being out of the water part of the time, and it seems to be doing as advertised. I recommend it for the kind of use you describe.

'tis but a wee keel...retracted anyway

yes, it's a swing keel. was looking for a full keel, but came to accept the swinger after awhile.
