The manufacturer's sticker on mine (a 1981 model) and a friends (1985 model) both say 38 gallons. I talked to Hunter about this (why the lit. said 44, tanks said 38) some time ago and they just blew me off, saying it was pre-production numbers. The literature indicates what they had in mind, not what they did. Also, the water tanks are really just 45 gallons each, not the 50 they claim.
