On this I am an expert!
Well, now, my first end to end splice probably cost me close to five or six hundred dollars. First I bought Brion Toss's video (West Marine) for $19.95. It is great and I watch it many times. Next I bought Brion Toss's Wand for doing braid splices. I highly recommend it for about $49.95. I further went and bought his book (Chapman's Book of Knots) for $14.95 which is also excellent.I then purchased the best line for my furling main sheet from West for about $60.00. Good stuff. I watched the tape one final time at home (don't have television on board--probably should) and started in on the splice on the boat. Had to do it on the boat as the line goes through fittings.Everything worked well until I had to put one end through the other line. It wouldn't go. Damn. I pushed and pushed and it would not go. I broke the wand. So back to West to buy another wand ($49.95). I broke that one in a way too.I was steamed. I had wasted a large number of hours watching the tape, reading the part in the book and doing just part of the damn splice.I went home to watch the tape again and the machine ate my tape! I was beside myself. I took the VCR apart carefully and extracted the tape. I clean the rollers and put it back together again. Then I watch the tape again but this time is really got chewed up.I bought a new VCR (almost the top of the line) for about $400 and a new tape ($19.95). Watch it one more time muttering things about Brion's ancestry and me being a brain doner. Aha! you pull the wand through--not push.Went back to the boat, finish the spice properly and it looks great and has worked for almost a year. Brion didn't know wheter to laugh or cry when he heard my story. It probably would have been cheaper to fly Brion to here, have him do the spice and fly him home. But I learned much from the tape and the book (and my experiences) I do wish I had had the VCR and the tape on board....But I needed a new VCR anyway. This year I'm going to make special dock lines for the boat. Once you do one or two, it is easy. I certainly like Brion Toss's wands--I think they are much better then fids. And now that I have finally done this splice, I'll leave the two fids on board with the book. I think I could do this again without as much trouble. Have fun.
