I have a 320 and am interested in the 387. I can't seem to find any reports on the boat. The 350 receives glowing reviews. Does anyone know anything about the performance and overall ownership of the 387? Seems like mums the word compared to the 350 unless they just have not sold many boats thus far.

387

My wife and I were really dreaming about a new boat. She was sick and tired of my 15 year old O'Day 272 with zero amenities. Each year we would go to the Miami boat show and look at boats. Each year we always came back to the C320. Well one year we finally did it and bought the 320. I took delivery on 9/11/2001 and was in heaven, but you know what, I bought it having never sailed her, it was just love at first sight. My guess and I know I'm not really answering your question is that it's an awesome boat, I was on the Catalina web site the other day looking at photo's of the 387, sweet!

Also interested in the 387

We have a Catalina 350 with 4 kids and 4 adults. We love the boat and spend considerable time on it. We have started to feel a bit "stuffy" in the aft cabin. The 387 opens that up quite a bit. So, we are already talking about getting out of the 350 soon (maybe selling on our own), and buying a new 387. I am also looking for information on the boat from an owner. I think it will be very hard to part with the 350!

Catalina 387

Folks, The C387 is a simple boat: 1. The layout is exactly like the tremendously successful Catalina 34, only mirror image - midships head (why would anyone want a head up forward anymore?), good nav station, comfortable berths, useful galley, great cockpit, good sailing gear... (maybe double shrouds) 2. The freeboard's a little higher than the C350, but it's a bigger boat. 3. Probably better electrical systems, but don't bet on it. You still need to figure out how YOU are going to use the boat and then design and install a system that works for you. I haven't run into anyone lately (past 20 years) who claims that Catalinas do not sail well. And besides, if someone said they don't, how are you going to know if THEY knew how to sail? Check the specs on Catalina's own website (you DO know how to get THERE, right?), and see if it makes sense for you. Remember, there were people who thought the C22, C30, C27, C25 were 'mystery' boats back then. Didn't happen, did it? If you are depending on someone else's opinion, it makes sense to form your own as well. How about asking to go out on a ride? Try this, too: http://www.catalinayachts.com/yachts.cfm?act=model&id=50

Upgrading to the new 387

Sue from NJ replied to an article on the new 387 saying that she wanted to step up from her new 350. I would be interest in talking with her about the sale of that 350.

350 > 387

We would be glad to talk to you regarding the sale of our 350. We are looking at a used 42 MK II now or a 40 for more living space with two families. Please let me know how to get in touch with you. Our 350 is fully equipped with 5000 auto pilot, ST60 (complete) color chartplotter bimni, doger and much more. We are not sure we are going to make the move but it is under consideration. Thanks..

Try google.com for info

You can go to google.com and type in Catalina 387 and it should bring up anything related to it including magazine articles if any. The 387 seems to be a refining of the 380 as it is basically the same boat, just a revision of the aft cabin to an athwartship berth, an 'L' shaped dinete and oposing setee with game table like the 36 and a change in the forward cabin away from a 'V' berth. There appears to be some minor change in the coach with larger fixed ports and a slight change in the coaming aft of the coach house. The basic result is a nicer profile which I think makes the 387 the best looking Catalina now. Personally, I'd prefer that the aft berth not span full beam so that a deep cockpit locker could be provided as in the 350. Now if they would just revise the 36 a bit and install a larger holding tank and shorten the cockpit a foot so you can actually use the aft part of the galley it would be perfect.
