There is one for sale near me. I've never heard of this boat before. I would appreciate any knowledge about them anyone is willing to share. How well were they built, how well do they sail, typical problem areas, etc.

Sumner was a boatbuilder in Amityville Long Island. There is someone on this forum who used to work for him. So hopefully he will see this thread and respond. I grew up fishing on a Sumner Craft 28. It was a very capable power boat. My older brothers nearly got me killed on that boat. Shinnicock Inlet, 8' breaking waves, etc. But Sumner built a solid boat and it came through fine. The nightmares have mostly ended. He also build some motor sailors, and then went into dingy's, and probably some other stuff. I met him at the NY Boat Show in, well a long time ago. Y.A. Tittle was there too so ...
As to the sailing quality of this line, I don't know.

I had a 17. It was generally very acceptable quality of build, and a descent sailor. Better than an o'day 17, but not as good as say a 470. It was a day sailor, pretty tough, when knocked down it will take a little water in the cockpit, but not enough to endanger you.
The Sumner 19 I see on line looks like similar lines, but with a little cabin. I think that would adversely affect the sailing qualities of the boat, getting toward piggish with the added weight up front. A mariner 19 might be a better choice for a small cabin trailer sailor.
