Considering buying that poptop enclosure for my 76c22... Is it worth it?How does it work? Does anyone have a pic of boat with enclosure?

It's OK in the Rain

Brent: How much does the cover sell for? I have one for my 1980 C-22 but haven't used it for about 15 years. It is made very well, from off-white vinyl with clear windows. It works by snapping around the top of the cabin onto snaps, (lots of snaps). There is a zipper in front of the mast, and one by the main hatchway. There are also snaps on the teak by the main hatchway, 3 on each side. It works well in the rain, giving more room, almost enough to stand up, depending on your height. Also, there is room behind the mast that gives you a little more storage room if you are stuck on the boat in the rain. The drawbacks are that it is heavy, and it takes up quite a bit of room, about 2 feet X 2 feet x 2 inches. It also takes a little while to put on. As I said it's good in the rain, but if there are thunder storms in the area, I prefer to have the pop-top down, unless I'm in a slip or in a really protected anchorage. What I really think would really be a good idea would be a nylon version of this cover with screen windows all around it, possibly with flaps all around it that could be zipped closed like those on a tent. This could let a lot of air into the boat and still keep the bugs out. (When it gets hot and humid, we just can't get enough air through our boat. I'm still working on that problem.) I don't recommend that you buy one without seeing it, unless you can get it really cheap. Aldo

Pop Top

Brent, I just bought a C22 myself. It has a cover but I have not put it up yet. I can tell you this, it looked like it had not seen the light of day in many years! I agree with Aldo, if it was made of ripstop nylon tent material it would be much more useful. Mine was so mildued I ended up running it through the washing machine, my wife wasn't home, with a lot of bleach!!! I turned out great but I may never use it as it is so big, heavy, and looks hard to put up. Good Luck, Jay Beery P.S. If you want to see one, I'm up in Indianapolis.

would either of you guys consider selling it?

CatDirect has it for 260 bucks.... A healthy investment for a 24 year old boat that has some other issues,,,but it would be very useful to me in that rain is a part of life here in Kentucky! a c22 is a small boat, and we like to overnight...I would be interested in an old one that still has some life!

Sorry, Brent

Brent: I'm sorry, but I want to keep mine, in case I ever sell my boat, (although that's unlikely after 20 years). As I said in my previous response, there are many snaps associated with the pop-top cover, and I consider it part of the boat because of all the snaps, even if I don't use it. I hope that you find one and less than $260. Keep trying to find a used one. Aldo

Pop Top

Sorry Brent, I also want to hang on to our cover. But I think if you can get one made at that price, I would go for it fast. Good Luck, Jay Beery

I understand completely thanks anyway!

Thanks! I would want to keep it too! I dont think the 260 is all that much but with an old boat like mine.. I want to be careful of how much i put into her!(especially in things like that;)

Idea for "Its OK in the rain"

I have the poptop cover and use it on all of my extended trips. I had the same problem with ventilation. I had a local sailmaker replace the side windows with mesh and had him put velcro around the removed windows so that they can be replaced when it rains hard. With the velcro the windows can also be put in part way up. Email me for details. Stollish@aol.com
