Does an oven make sense on a small boat?

For you? No! An oven makes on sense. For me It was an early requirement. Cookies, muffins, biscuits, casseroles all come from my oven on the boat.

We don't use the HOME oven, which is big, gas-fired, stationary, and in a large space. There's no way we would use an oven on a sailboat. I never understood their inclusion, except to appeal to admirals when purchasing. It's a significant waste of priceless space(unless used for storage), adds weight, and is extra equipment that needs maintenance.

Microwave is much more usable.

Roasted leg of lamp, broiled salmon steak with tomato and basil, and pork loin roast just to name a few.

My admiral won't come on board if the food is not up to standard.

Alexco, your Admiral speaks my language. My 'cruising' is limited to Catalina weekends but when staying aboard, it's not camping. We eat like kings and our oven is essential to that end. No paper or Melamine plates either and no plastic utensils.

There seem to be two schools of cooking among sailors. beer and burgers and gourmet. I won't give a microwave cooker house room and to put one on a boat would also require substantial electrical expense. Microwave cookers are very limited in usefulness.

I pulled the oven/range combo apart on my origo and have my air conditioner installed where the oven used to sit. It solved a huge dilemma I had, and I had never even fired it up. It looked pristine, and was original to the 1989 Hunter Vision 32. I suspect it had been almost never used in 20 plus years. The AC for the oven was a very good tradeoff.

we have a microwave, BBQ, oven and added an induction hot plate and we use them all....

The oven is great for baking and roasting when it is not too hot. The microwave is used to warm up leftovers, makes great oatmeal, I often use it for baked potatoes then crisp them up on the BBQ. We added a single burner induction hot plate this year to use in the slip. It is amazing, we want one for our home. It really cuts down on the heat in the cabin and was surprised it cooks much faster than a gas burner.

Like anything else on a boat if you don't use it you are better off without it.

Bob

Since we only have a single 5 lb. propane tank, I was also wondering about how much gas is consumed by using the oven? I've only seen 'guidelines' with regard to propane usage and trip planning/provisioning. Most of our cooktop use is in quick bursts of heat, an oven would be on for much longer periods, but is it typically burning more or less fuel in that time?[/QUOTE]

We get 6 months of weekends and some longer trips out of 5lbs. We also have a spare 5lbs so I don't really worry much about using it up. I you are really paranoid you can by an adapter that allows use of a one pound emergency bottle.

The burner in the oven in my boat is the same size as one of the burners on the top. Very rarely do you bake anything for more than an hour in the size portions you would use on the boat.

Boy are we together on this one. I agree totally on the microwave- would be a total waste for me.

And Ross already knows what I use as an oven- a pressure cooker;)

Works for me:)

Just curious how it will effect resale values. Personally, I love our oven on our cooler spring and fall seasons. Have you ever eaten a bake stuffed lobster .

Oven

When I had just bought our 310, we left Havre De Grave and it was early morning, 40 out with a nice drizzle. About 45 minutes into the overnight trip the admiral popped up to the cockpit with fresh coffee and warm blueberry muffins right out of the oven. Since a stove, much less an oven, was a new to me thing on a boat I was hooked. Admiral would mutiny if there was no over, and I like to be fed oven baked stuff. :D

Nope

No, not as a pot, we have those. It makes great brownies as well! We have had this for years for camping. Just started using it on the boat. Had friends over for a meal and made the biscuits, they really enjoyed them.
