Here is the hin# for my 222 O'Day SURK 0356 K5 86 Would the 356 be the number I would use for her sail? Any other comments about what the other letters and numbers are welcome. Thank You in advance.

My sailmaker suggested last three numbers of the HIN - therefore 586. I too did not know the original sail number - the link below is for O'Day Mariner numbers. Cheers.

Since in my case 586 with the 86 being the year of mfg there could be just nine different boats...??? But if the middle numbers are the actual boat ID 0356 it would make better sense. in otherwords the 356 boat built. From what I have read O'Day built the 22 and then came with the 222 model. I wonder if the boat I own is the 356th 22 O'day. ??

hull and sail numbers
generally speaking, the sail number is the hull number (i.e., the portion of the hull id # that tells you you have the 300th copy of that model). The standard format of hin's changed sometime in the early seventies I think, but your hull id # looks like the older format. "Newer" oday hin's start with "xdy". I believe there is a link to interpreting hin's in the links section of this website.

The HIN on my '86 O'day 192 is SURJ0313G586. The number on the mainsail is 313. So my guess is that your sail number should be 356. Regarding the 222 vs. the 22 - In the mid '80s O'day (at that time owned by Lear-Siegler) introduced several new models, that replaced boats of the same length in the model lineup, and a "2" was added to differentiate them. There's a 192, 222, 272, 302 & 322 that I know of in that series. I'd say there's sort of a family resemblence among them in the shape of the cabin windows and the rake of the bow and transom.

Now, I know that none of us know everything, But I have never heard of this. The numbers on the sail are either the documentation numbers issued by the US Coast Guard (most likely you would not document a small boat) or are assigned by the PHRF or other sailing committee to id the sail boat during a race.......

I'm planning on racing my gem and since there are no sail #"s on any of my sails I could then use the three #'s found in the hin# ie 356. Correct? If I don't give the race comittee a number they will give me one,and I would rather have a number that is in the hin.

It is pretty clear ... in the U.S. ....
most one designs try to use hull numbers on the sail. OBVIOUSLY using hull numbers in a handicap race could be a problem if you had competing boats with the same hull number. In small races that could be equivalent to hitting the lottery. But in any case you would generally put the Logo ID on the sail as well ... For example the logo for the 272 is and O with 27 in it and a 2 after it. In the recent Newport Bemuda start nearly every start had over earlies and many of the numbers they read off were the longer international numbers and confusing to follow. Vic "Seven" #622 O272
