I am looking to buy a 1991 Hunter 28 and want to take it to Long Island Sound. I'm wondering if there have been any issues with the keel I should be aware of or anything else I should be aware of for this boat?

It has a Furlex furling system on it and needs to have the headsail replaced sooner than later. I'm also wondering what the best overall size is for this boat if I sail in winds anywhere from 2 to 25 kts. I'm a cruiser who tends to go for the one size headsail fits all approach.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Check the holding tank. If not replaced it will need to be eventually.

I've enjoyed my Hunter 28, but by all means check the holding tank. If it's aluminum, it's either leaking now or soon will be; to make matters worse, there is no opening in the boat it will pass through, so you'll need to cut a hatch in the aft cabin bulkhead. This is not a difficult job. Buy one of these or similar; not expensive: http://www.boatersplus.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=97635
Now, for the good news; call Ronco and talk to Scott; he is now making a replacement tank in plastic and it's almost too inexpensive to be true.
Fair winds,

Headsail Size for Hunter 28

We've had a deep keeled 28.5 since new in '86, with 110 Jib, 135 Genoa and 155 Genoa. For the shoal draft 28 I'd suggest you'd be comfortable with no more than a 135, particularly on a furler. The 2GM20F Yanmar is a great engine; fixed two blade prop is standard, we used to race the boat so we have a Martec folder; but would recommend a feathering prop if you can afford it.
Adding a Bimini was the best addition we've made from a cruising standpoint.
I'd second the recommendation on polyethylene fuel tanks and fiberglass water lift muffler; any 'built-in' or aluminum tankage is going to be problematic.
The older model Hunters with cast iron keels require on-going maintenance when bottom painting.

Does anyone have a preference on which size headsail to use as you primary sail to fly? Thanks for the information on the holding tank. I'll check it out.
