I got one quote for a new dodger, and I thought the price was high. I looked on this site, and the price seems low (no complaint!), but it doesn't appeal to me. I would appreciate recommendations for local canvas guys (Westport, MA) as well as on-line sources. Its a C36 Mk. 1 Thanks, jv

Price differences.

John: We had a custom dodger made a few years ago for our H'31. It has a stainless steel frame (not alum.) and ALL of window panels zip out (no roll up). We also have covers for the windows. When we zip out the windows we can zip-in sun screens. We also have a piece of canvas that zips across the aft edge of the dodger that goes back to the back stay. We also have s.s hand holds for grab rail when coming and going from the cockpit. The price for this was about $2000 (all sunbrella). The difference is price has a lot to do with custom v.s. off the shelf. If you do not have a design that you are specifically interested in the off-the-shelf units are good. You can upgrade the frame for an additional cost. You also need to consider that mine was installed by the canvas shop. You will have to do the installation yourself. This all takes time and costs money.

Best Price

I have probably talked and got a quote from all the canvas people in the northeast. The best price and I think best job was done by Marine Cushion & Canvas Co. in Warren RI. Kevin Johnson will do a great job for you. People from my club saw my dodger and the price. After that Several people have had Kevin make dodgers for their boats. Good luck, but please give him a call.

Check out the link to my C-36 dodger article!!!

I wrote an article about my canvas experience on my C-36 MK I. There is a lot more to canvas than meets the eye. Canvas can make or break the look of your boat! The only way to get a truly great dodger is to have it custom made for your boat. The original dodger in the article was also custom made but buy some one who was not good at canvas! DON'T go by price go by the quality and experience of your canvas maker and you'll be much more satisfied with the end result. Click on "Related Link" below to see the article... -Rodd C. Maine

Hey JV

John: Bob's dodger looks very nice on his boat but do not expect to be able to get anything close to this price for your boat. My guess is that you probably have 1.5 - 2 times the area that Bob's 27 has. If you get something for twice what he paid you are probably getting a good price. Just remember, it is quality and features that run up the price.
