Dodger

Where can I get a dodger for the vega. I had a person from North Sails
here in Seabrook give me an estimate, and it was near $1500 for what I
consider a very small dodger when compared to most boats. Is this a
good price. Are there other options that are less expensive? How
essential is it to have one anyway, consideing how much it adversely
affects visibility? Would you all consider it to be mandatory
equipment for offshore cruising?

I consider a dodger absolutely essential. Sailing is much more fun if one
is not taking waves over the deck! We had our dodger made by Diana Webb of
the Vega Association of Great Britain a few years ago and have been very happy
with it. I don\'t recall the exact cost, but it was actually less than a
local guy had quoted us. We liked the idea that she custom built it for the
Vega. I don\'t know whether she is still making them or not. Steve Birch would
be able to tell you.

Hi All

Diana Webb still makes the Dodger (Sprayhood in UK language!) to order.

Email me offgroup for pricing etc (steve@...)

Each is handmade by Diana and she is a real craftswoman. Only for Series I & II Vegas. Im afraid she cxannot make them for teh Vegas with the wide coamings.

Cheers

I do consider a dodger ALMOST essential for offshore cruising. Given a limited budget, I
can think of several other more important items (such as a self-steering gear, or a decent
stove, or a wind generator, or possibly a heater...if I were cruising someplace a bit cooler).
However, a properly designed dodger can be a real lifesaver. I'm not sure how Diana's are
made...but if they come past the companionway far enough, it will keep you out of the sun
for several hours a day. In addition, on those particular days when the spray is coming
over the bow, the dodger will help to keep you dry. Keep in mind that on light wind days,
you'll probably want to go without it to avoid the (slightly) additional drag.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the visibility issue. Its not so much of a problem that
you cant overcome it. In addition, in bluewater, you'll be looking around anyway. Coming
in to an anchorage (or mooring), you can always drop it before hand.

Also, I've ordered stuff from Steve. Even if he is not involved with the sale of a dodger, he
won't steer you wrong.

Best of luck.

Hi all,
Got mine from Diana about 4 years ago (could be 5 years). Put it up soon after and it's been up ever since, year round, and it has suffered nothing, it is like new today.
It is much sturdier than the original and the "glass" is still completely clear with NO maintenance whatsoever.
It really is a great product, as is everything I've ordered from Steve, or in the case of the dodger, from Diana.

I don't know what Diana gets for a new dodger, or if she still makes them even, but though I'm not sure what I paid 4 or 5 years ago, I am sure it was maybe half that much or less.
As noted in my last e-mail, it has held up perfectly since then and has been up year round.

Good luck in your search,

Hans Heiduck

Having sailed across the deep blue without one, we consider a dodger
essential and put it ahead of self steering gear in terms of
priorities. As with everything else, you get what you pay for, good
bad or ugly. We had specific ideas about what we wanted and were
willing to pay for it. Ours cost about $2000 installed and we think
it was worth every penny.

Diana's spray hoods are excellent and made to fit the Vega so if you
don't want to go through the trouble and expense of having one custom
designed and built to order I think that is the way to go. Howard
Barbour recently showed me the one he got from Diana for "Shiva". He
is quite pleased with it.

Has anyone ordered a Sailrite dodger kit for a series II Vega (the one with the fixed boom)? Or ordered a dodger from someone else? What measurements did you have to provide? Were you able to get something with hand holds on top (to hold on to when going forward with the dodger up)? Do you have a design and measurements to share? I reached out to Diana Webb and she may be a bit busy right now.

Thanks,

Jack

Jack,

I've done a lot of canvas work on my series I but I decided against doing the dodger myself when I started looking into what it entailed. I had a local company called ALMO Canvas (Baltimore, MD) make a dodger using the old frame for just over 1K$. It doesn't have handholds for going forward which I have thought about adding. Other then that I couldn't be happier-it looks great and works great. I've had it on through two full seasons and it's still in great shape. They came out to the boat and measured so I didn't have to do anything besides write the check.

I recently received a quote from Island Nautical Canvas that I'm going to take advantage of. I'll give them a call tomorrow. Will let you know what I end up doing. Thanks for the helpful advice!

Oh it's never easy-but sometimes it is easier then having to look at a %$#-uped job that will have to be repeated anyway.

New dodger for me too, in down east Maine, Yacht Penelope. If we can't get to the nice English seamstress perhaps among us all we can find a good New English seamstress ... & a more rugged design than the one that came with these yachts. from myphone nn

I know Diana can only do Series I and Series II
Vegas. The coachroof of the Seies III is completely different.
