FWIW we went the route of having a dodger custom made by a local shop. I would not doubt that it cost more than you could get it for, but it has been completely successful. The business owner came to the boat and took a whole bunch of measurements so that it clears all winches etc. and gives maximum protection. He bent the frame himself and then took it to a shop for final welding. They made the windows in house.
After 4 years it is still drum tight and if it never gets damaged I would expect the frame to last the life of the boat. You could do chin ups on the aft rail.
We chose to have handles on the side and I would never not have them. The overall frame is that strong that you can really brace yourself on the handles. We went with Lexan windows and they are still in great shape. The covers are held on with twist snaps and quick to remove - would definitely go that way again.
It did cost (3.5 boat bucks) but on San Francisco bay it is worth it.
