I'm trying to find a replacement for what I think is the original Dodger for an '86, Hunter 34. The frame is fine but the canvas is shot. Any suggestions? I looked in the canvas shop on this website and I couldn't even find a Dodger.
We've learned this the hard way. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But, you should be able to get a new canvas cover at pretty much any canvas shop if you're willing to ship your frame, or the old canvas to use as a pattern. If you can get a canvas maker out to your boat, so much the better.
Chet:It may be original but it was not an option in those days.If you have the old canvas you should be able to find a shop that will be able to use it for a general pattern. Most of these shops want to do it "their way".Most good canvas "guys" will want to see the boat too. Once the dodger is made they will want to come to the boat and finish the fasteners (otherwise you will be drilling a lot of new holes.)There must be several shops in your area.If you are going to re-do it you may want to consider some options too. Think about all panels that zip out instead of rolling up. There are also options for a complete sacraficial cover (vs windown covers, or in addition to), hand holds. Reinforce areas that may abrade (fore/aft edges of dodger top) use a vinyl product vs. sunbrella. If you do it right, it will last for many years. Tell them to use the best quality thread that is available (this saves a restitch half way through it's life).
I used thiese people in the Annaplois office also in Hampton. Great work Fianl fit done at boat beautiful work They did a full enclosure for me on 2000 340 with arch (challenging pattern ) Panels zip out or roll up have three which can use screen panel or solid overhead clear site panels with covers etc. can not say enough about the quality of their workthttp://na.northsails.com/contact_us.taf
they have the pattern for an h34. pick your color and it will be in your hands in three weeks. mine was nine years old and lookin good when I sold the h34
Is your frame a ridgid one or a folding? I had a new dodger made for my folding frame on my H34 last summer by Island canvas herein Toronto. Cost was about 1400 cdn.
What an intelligent answer!!! What do you think I was trying to find out about? Very impressed with all your help. Hopefully I can give you the same type of help when you're in need.
