I am considering replacing the material on my Dodger and asking if anyone has dealt with Outdoor Textiles in Fla. Their website is www.outdoortextiles.com and they advertise a good selection of sunbrella colors and widths. Prices appear to be good (12.00/yd-46 inch width for over 5 yd. purchase) Are there any better suppliers/prices? Any problems with the company? I hope to sew the new dodger myself using the old as a pattern, during this winter. I have a beige hull with dark brown trim--any suggestions with colors other than brown? I have the Sailrite catalog, hoping for additional advice or suggestions. Thanks in advance

Sunbrella is Sunbrella

Unless you're concerned about not receiving your order, which seems highly unlikely, it doesn't really matter what source you buy Sunbrella from - it's all the same stuff, just sold in different stores. Now there ARE other fabrics that are *like* Sunbrella, and that probably would make a difference. As far as color is concerned, up there in the great white north, you probably wouldn't have the same problems as someone in Florida would have with black. I think tan is also a nice color, especially given your color scheme. LaDonna

Sunbrella

If you are going to sew your own, make sure you use an outdoor thread. They are usually polyester from my experience, and the best source is probably the same folks you buy your Sunbrella from. Cotton thread will deteriorate way too early if used outdoors and your sail cover/bimini/dodger will just fall apart requiring resewing on a regular basis.

Maybe better deals in CN.

Brian: You may want to shop in Canada first. By the time you deal with customs, shipping prices and exchange rates you may be better off at home. I hope you have an industrial quality machine. Some of the areas that need to be reinforced will require that you sew thru multiple layers. The reinforced areas are usually done with vinyl materials to prevent chafing. Sunbrella does not hold up well with ANYTHING rubbing on it. My preference is one of the green shades. I hate browns and they do not hold up very well either.

That's a good price.

I usually buy from Sailrite and they get over $14.00 for a yard of 46". I prefer working with 60" but it depends on the project. If you find a better price than $12. please post it here.

Brian this is more a question then answer but does sunbrella come in different weights? I think someone told me once that there is a light and a heavy weight so that might accout for the cost difference. Just a thought Good Luck with your winter project!

Sunbrella-thanks everyone

OutdoorTextiles advertise a weight of 9.5 oz. /sq.yd. or (116.8 grams/sq.meter for Canadians). (Did I mention that Canada is an aboriginal word meaning land of high taxes, over goverment, lousy dollar and a metric system that guarantees confusion)? The best price I have found locally is $25.95 Cdn. for 46 in. plus 7% Prov. sales tax and on top of that another 7% General Sales Tax, loved and known as G.S.T.( get screwed tax) I take your points well about re-inforcing where there is abrasion and also about thread. I have a commercial machine which I have converted to Armstrong power and while very slow, easy to use. Still undecided on color (Hmmmmmm), but thx for suggestions. When completed I will embroider "contributions by Peter, Ed, Steve, Patrick and LaDonna on one corner. Seriously, Thanks for the help!
