JSI of St Petersberg, Fl. is looking for a local Catalina 310 to take some basic measurements in order to build a dodger for my boat which is on the hard in Michigan. They are the primary source for dodgers and bimney's for the Largo plant. When they went to build mine they found that their data is corrupted and can't build the frame. Sandra Goeller in the loft has offered a gift cert. to the owner for this permission. Call her direct at 386 697 9226 or me (Deke) at
231 622 1688. Thanks

I have been considering a new dodger

2-3 years ago I contacted JSI about a new dodger and they acted like I had a 3rd eye. Be interesting to hear about how this turns out.

Hi Mr. Farinas, thanks for the reply and I will get on Sandra's back to move on this. I read your very good article in Southwinds but did not want to bother you so I really appreciate your making your 310 available. Ron (deke)

Thank you Ron. I just heard a phone message (Monday at 8:00 pm ET) from Sandra. My phone was on vibrate and was not aware of it. So I left a message for her in her cell. I can meet with the JSI reps Thursday or Friday of this week, or any time next week. Hope they can make a dodger for your 310. We have a dodger on our 310, but have not used it this year. It did come in handy a couple of years ago when the winters here in Dunedin were considered to be the worse winters in about 80 years.

My problem

Ron, One issue I had was I want to lower my dodger about 2 inches so I can see without having to get on my tippy toes. Seemed like a lot to ask at the time.

Man, some days I really curse Catalina for the height of their dodger. It's exactly at eye level for me.

My thoughts

I have some of those fittings that you put into the canvas. I may just cut the stupid thing down to where I want it, install those things and then I have something to give to a canvas guy to make it the way I want. Other problem is I want to change a few other things with my dodger like a window in the front that just zips out instead of rolls up.

I ended up with a little step platform that I stand on to see over the bar. Yes it should have been about 3"-4" lower. More what I have heard called an East Coast Style. I believe overall the boat would have better lines with a lower dodger. It would have to "Ramp up" to allow the helms person to stay out of the Werther and see, but you could also added a window to the filler section. One other things we did was to sew little "Wings" (sorry no photo, maybe in the spring) to keep the cockpit dryer. If you look the filler section is much more narrow at the front edge then the dodger is. So we sewed triangles of material so that the filler is now the width of the dodger in front, and taper to the width of the Bimini at the rear. Amazed how much rain this keeps from rolling into the cockpit, and keeps the seats dryer now.

I loved my original dodger from JSI that came with the boat when new. After 11 seasons I need new canvas. Thought it would be a good idea to buy it through JSI since they had the dimensions, etc. Bad idea! They did not have dimensions and asked me to ship the old dodger canvas to them so they could make sure "it would fit". New dodger received and as I installed it I found that many of the fastener posts installed on my boat were exactly where the new canvas had seams and zippers. I opted not to move fasteners on the boat and the install looks like crap (to me). Others don't notice unless I point it out. Bottom line I would strongly recommend going to a local canvas shop! Emphasis on strongly.

Great idea. The rain pours onto the cockpit seats in mini waterfalls at the forward edge of the filler piece, just as you describe. I'll mention your 'wings' to the admiral, she's pretty handy with a sewing machine.

I have installed my new dodger that was built by JSI. All went well and the exterior grab handles have been ordered. The grab handles will complete the design by adding the lateral brace to the frame.

Have any photos by any chance??? (Did you go with the couple inches lower?) Maybe I will get a chance to see it first hand, as I have a trip across the lake planed for early August and will be in Charlevoix for a night or two...

I went with the tallest frame I could package under the boom that is 72" at aft center. I had looked at many designs and could not find the ideal frame height that would allow clear vision from the helm or pulpit seat. I chose function over looks. This design will allow complete removal of the windows, thus removing much of the drag under normal weather conditions. Give me a call when your in town and maybe we can get together. Ron at 231-622-1688 I sent Sandra Goeller at JSI pictures and dimensions if you want to contact her in St. Petersburg for their pricing etc. 727-577-3220

If I bought a C310 without a dodger and bimini what would I expect to pay ball park for the complete enclosure including sides and rear?

Hi stewy, I purchased my dodger from JSI in St. Petersburg for a total cost of $1,867.36 but I picked it up myself and installed it in Michigan. The design is unique as all windows can be completely removed leaving only the top panel and/or the frame folded forward out of the way. Sandra Goeller has the complete design and templets as well as some dimensions and pictures that I sent her. Her no. is 386-697-9226. My email is baron1942@msn.com, send me your email address and I can send you some info and pictures. Ron (deke)
