Hi, all. Isn't the 28.5 a great boat??? We love it. I was wondering if anyone out there has added a dodger to thier boat. I wonder how effective it would be, given the mainsheet traveller is on the bridgedeck. Any good sources? Approx costs? Thanks in advance.

Dodger

I have one on my 28.5 but my traveller is at the forward end of the cockpit. My dodger has an aluminum frame with sunbrella fabric and clear vinyl windows. It came with the boat so I can't comment directly on cost; I've gotten replacement estimates for the fabric at boat shows for about $750 +. You could also try the Sailrite catalog (or web site www.sailrite.com). It works great and I can't imagine sailing without it. Alan

Dodger Pix

YEa, great idea, wish I'd thought of that. If you don't have a pic, how about a description? How far on either side f the hatch does it go? To the Handraols? How far forward? Does it cover that whole fiberglas hatch=cover area or just some of it? Thanks in advance. You can email the pic to me at richard.belisle@jwp.com.

No pix but have 1000 words

My 87H285 already had a dodger when I bought it last year. Its forward edge runs over the hatch sleeve cover, so yes, it covers the entire companionway. Width-wise, it covers the entire width of the cabin, and is actually secured on the side of the cabin near the deck. The dodger on my boat does get in the way, a little bit, when sailing downwind and trying to let the boom out all the way. My traveller is on the forward cockpit companionway ledge. If I have to sail downwind for very long, I fold the dodger down, as this only takes about a minute to release & fold. I'll look around for some pics that show this and try to scan some.

Wouldn't be without it

Mine 285 came with a Dodger and I would not be without one. In rainstorms you can keep the sliding hatch open and as explained in the earlier response, downwind it is a slight problem however, I just let the mainsheet rub on the dodger. In the early spring and fall it is a life saver, a place to get out of the cool breeze for a while. Replacement cost is around $800. Good luck

dodger/bimini pics

I am soon taking delivery of a 1987 28.5 and would like to add a dodger and bimini before the cooler days hit this fall. Anyone out there with pictures of their dodger and or bimini available? Any suggestions would be appreciated too! Please post on HOW photo forum or email me directly. Thx. brtaylor@nortelnetworks.com
