Dodger for a 1974 H25

I'm interested in getting a dodger for my 25.It looks as though there used to be one on her(snaps and tie-downs) Any of you 25 owners have a dodger and want to comment on it? Do you use it often?Does it get in the way? The HOW store has them for salefor like $1000....yikes! That is more than I paid forthe boat! Any suggestions?Thanks!Chris

How handy are you?

You could make one from a Sailrite kit. I made my bimini and will eventually do a new dodger. Problem would be using the existing hardware, how would you line it up?Personally I don't like a dodger, I prefer the clear view and wind in my face. But I do put up my old one on rare occasions. I suppose when I venture offshore I'll be glad to have it. I have also seen some very nice homemade "hard" dodgers. One I like is just stainless tubes with a hard fiberglass top. Very open until you snap the curtains on all the way around. But the curtains were almost entirely clear plexiglass, very nice.

Pro-Dodger

We had a dodger on our '74 H-25 and loved it. I installed it-- I was 16 or 17 then. It came from the late John Eggers, Hunter's first sailmaker. It was always up when we used the boat and made a good place to be out of the wind on a tack or the sun (both coming from the same compass point round here). I would much rather have a dodger than a Bimini top-- it's more versatile and does not get in the way of actual SAILING.$1000 sounds WAY high for a usable dodger. Try smaller sailmakers and canvas people. It does NOT have to be Sunbrella. Ours was plain white dacron.JC 2
