Like a lot of Hunters with the overhead arch - mine does NOT have the optional dodger - and that's fine with me. I have never seen the need for a dodger on the Great Lakes. But having some shade on those hot summer days would be nice! Has anyone out there fitted a small Bimini to the companionway area and how did you do it to avoid the winch area? Thanks! Yes

I have seen a 410 Hunter with a large type bimini covering behind the arch and infront of the arch.
Me I love the fold down dodger and connector to the arch but any way don't remember for sure how it was done but forward of the arch were stainless arms off the arch going forward covering the compainway and straps some how pulling forward.
Go to a canvas guy and I am sure he will help show you how he can set it up many ways for sure or on on the web on cavas sites showing different idea's.

We have a dodger on our 356. The windshields and side panels zip out and we've used the top alone many times as you describe, as a sort of small bimini for the companion way when it's nice to have shade. With a short connector piece, the dodger zips to the bimini, too, making an uninterrupted roof from in front of the hatch to the stern rail.

As to needing a dodger on the Great Lakes, there's not much you trully "need" on a pleasure boat, I guess, but the dodger sure has come in handy for cruising in the rain, keeping the cold breeze off the cockpit at anchor, and allowing us to anchor or berth with the hatch open during rain/cold. We added it to the boat later, and have used it and enjoyed it much more than I had even expected. If you're going to get the little hatch bimini, I'd recommend going ahead and getting the side and front panels, too, or at least having zippers, etc., added to the bimini so you could add the other pieces later.

Finally, remember that if you make the little hatch bimini too little, it will often be throwing its shade somewhere other than your hatch. Might as go full bore now, in other words, and get a bimini top that is as wide as it can comfortably be.

I guess that I agree with Paul356, we have both a dodger[big enough to stand under, with a Bimini together with the connector piece. On our dodger the clear window panels can be unzipped and rolled up out of the way if your racing or want wind in your face[our course going downwind zip 'em up again!
My beef is the conector piece which seems to be where you want to extend your bimini, I have to remove it so that I can see my sails and telltales. I sail out of Marina Del Rey so the weather is really not a factor. If it rains between May and November, the local media react as if the world is comming to an end, and you really don't want to drive down to your boat as the oil on the freeways come to the surface and it's like the old Doduge'um cars.
Go for a sail of some one who has one of the set-ups discussed.

I have a 40.5 hunter and the Bimini goes from the back to just short of the doghouse slider. There are 12 side panels, 3 on each side. The front three cover the companionway slider. The Bimini is tall enough to stand under when at the top of the companionway. It has a skylight over the helm which allows a view of the sails but the 5'1" wife can't see anything when she helms the boat. If we call the forward center panel 12:00 there are bug screen replacement windows at 12, 3, 6, and 9:00.
We love it as it:
allows sailing in cooler weather (it is dark blue and really sucks up the sun)
keeps the wind and rain off when it is nasty
provides shade (but is kinda hot) during sunny days
keeps the bug out when at anchor
creates a draft (vacuum) that vents the boat if we leave the forward hatch open at anchor
We are planing an upgrade to allow the collection of rain water via a gutter system

Sunbrella rules, highly recommend it to other materials

I have a large dodger with a aft zipper that zips to a bimini. This week I am installing a bimini that zips to the dodger then stretches to the arch where it is connected by a zipper. Aft of the arch is a fold out bimini. E-mail me at sjpenny5@gmail.com and I will glad to send you photos of the final installation.
