Documenting our boat.

We just purchased a Cat 30 that has been documented in the past and we are going to exchange the existing documentation to us. I have been studying how to do it myself (it does not seem too difficult). Does anyone know if it is too difficult to do and if I should go through a agency to do it?ThanksCM

I paid an agency however I have dealt with

the documentation center by phone to make address changes and they are very helpful, I would not hesitate to try to do it myself, savings are considerable, agency will charge $300 to $500. Check doc center website, you can even access your records from there.

Documentation

The USCG has made the process pretty easy, especially if you have a boat with a clear, continuous title. If you purchased a boat with current USCG documention, you can be reasonably sure the title is clear.The folks who charge hundreds of dollars to do this on such a boat are clearly rip-off artists. If the boat had a murky title, however, they might earn their fee.Congratulations on your purchase!--RonD

Vessel documentation

The process is as as simple as downloading a few forms, filling them out, and mailing them with a check or credit card number to the National Vessel Documentation Center.I've done it three times.Just go the the link and follow the instructions.

Real easy to transfer

If the boat is already documented, I think it costs about $12 to process the change of ownership. I did this when I purchased my boat back in '99. Very painless.Les Murrays/v Ceilidh'86 C-36 #560
