I'm looking for a way to search for vessel documentation numbers. I think that my boat was documented at one time, and would like to search and see if that's what the numbers are. I've been to the coastguard website and couldn't find a way to search them, and looked on this site, I've seen the link here before (I think). Any help would be great.

Go to: http://www.st.nmfs.gov/st1/CoastGuard/index.html and enter either the boat name or the old documentation number.

When the documentation 'expires' because its not renewed (yearly) the name & Doc. number usually is dropped from the listing. If the boat was documented, there should still be a 'permanent mounting' of the doc. numbers and its 'net weight' & somewhere on/near the starboard bow and 'inside' the boat. Such permanent 'marking' is always in such a fashion so that if removed will show some 'destruction' of where the 'numbers' were located.

Old listing are still there. My old boat is still listed under my name, but new owner opted for CF numbers vs. documentation.

I got my complete history from the coast guard in falling waters west Virginia
There was lots of info online for free and and for $25 I got a print out of all the owners which included payment and mortgage history.
I used HUN number . I bought my boat at auction and found no lien hbolders so I could bid with confidence. There is another id number as stated previously and its MOLDED into the boat so it either cant be removed or will show that it has been defaced.
Good luck. Errol
