my formal degree is in philosophy and television..

... my long time work is airport ground controler for the last 27 years.. However my life changed and 'opened up' when I 'discoverd' windsurfing 20 years ago, and years later 'converting' ( with age, family and overweight..) to sailing...the job becaming just a financial meaning to support this (and the family of course..) I have a lot of satisfaction doing things myself on the boat , in all technical aspects, all self-learned - A LOT of reading , observing and some formal studying ( for offshore skipper licence)- as well as sailing often ,not only on weekends but offshore as well. I am viewed as local 'expert' on boating ( and earlier on windsurfing..) ..and yet ,I had nothing to do with boats or watersport till I was 30..neither any of my family.. It really has little to to with trade or academic studies.. One tend -given enough time ,some money and open mind- to advance and improve in what he likes best.. However , I wouldn't dream to touch even basic things on my car..it looks much too dificult..

I am by training a marine geologist and have sailed all over the world in research vessels. Now that I've gotten lazy and gone to work for the government I have to take myself to sea so I bought TASHTEGO.

I do those strange 3D pictures that the rest of you say "How do they do that". Primarily we do packaging, video boxes, security instruments, and a few post office stamps. It is all done with light and mirrors. My work requires a smattering of knowledge of many different disciplines - just like owning a boat does.

Trained as a carpenter, went into business with a partner and built homes for ten years. Went back into teaching as a carpentry instructor (last 21 years-4 to go) YIPPEE!! Overwhelmed with a new boat!

My new 410 is almost finished with commissioning at the Cortez Marina in San Diego. After almost 29 years as a (retired) policeman, I can't wait to tackle the thing. My rigger told me to just take one thing at a time. The sailing is the easy part. I bought a ton of books including Calder's. Every time I go down to visit I end up scratching my head and hope the service manager will thoroughly indoctrinate me during the delivery. Good thing my son is a mechanical genius.

Not sure any more which came first my love of boats and surfing or the weather. Sort of a chicken and egg arguement these days, as all three started at a young age.

WELL NOW------------I'm the guy with pleanty of cold beer, with a group in the cockpit. Always asking people how did they solve their problem (actually my problem) My questions are always----how do we make this work,-----Can you bright engineers look at this for me? Creating a team to solve problems on sailboats and the passing of knowledge. They call me an Executive. I love sailing .

College theatre professor, earlier 25 years in a high school. Don't be surprised, though, doing theatre means solving technical, hands-on, problems. Dad was a mechanic, so I learned a bit as a kid.....

i'm a non-technically oriented liberal arts major, and couldn't agree more with the intimidation factor from all the systems...i'm gradually learning to do minor troubleshooting, and hope eventially to be able to converse intelligently with the mechanics, electronics gurus, etc.

Hope everyone laughs at this as much as I do, and doesn't take offence. I actually kept a record of what fellow cruisers in Mexico had done back in the "real world", over a period of about six years. Lots of doctors, pilots, engineers, mechanics, firemen, nurses, carpenters, people with a "skill", as I indelicately put it....but only two former government bureaucrats........hmmmmmmmmmm

Cop to Mechanic to...

Started as a cop, quit and went traveling around world via ship, saw Caterpillar signs everywhere, became a cat mechanic up through to Service Manager, quit when enough in cruising kitty to go around again, am in Oz half way around. I wouldn't go blue water if I couldn't fix everything that breaks, cause they do break. SV Patience H37C

Not a preacher in the bunch!

I am and that's why a I chose a boat that requires a minimum of maintenance: a 95 h26. And I am slowly learning how to do all that stuff that needs to be done. With the help of a friend have added shore power, T2000 Autohelm and a few other gadgets. I still rely on the advice and help of others -- humility helps.

I have been building from the age of 16 im 38 now i sail catalina 30 I can fix allmost antything! with some help from you guys Ihave done all the work on my boat up to now . my boat is 1989c30 . It will need more work in the future I think i will be up for it .It is just hard to find the time I am better with hamer and nail then i am with paint ,wax epoxy or computer John

Started my working career as an accountant but hated doing taxes. Went to active duty in the Navy and got into Naval Intelligence. This led to a civilian career (22 years) as Special Agent, Naval Investigative Service. One of the benefits of this was keeping me near the oceans. Now retired and still near the ocean - only a mile from my boat. Going way back - I started sailing as a Sea Scout at age 16. Gary - Thanks for starting this interesting thread.
