I recently purchased a Catalina 30 and I need to replace the dock lines. Does anyone have recommendations of 1/2" vs 5/8" line?

Dock lines for C30

1/2 inch should be just fine. 5/8 would be too big for your cleats anyway. Depending on your dock arrangement, get four lines for breast lines, and one at least 35 feet long for a midships spring line.

"Yes" to the 1/2 inch, but I also have an extra set to double up when severe weather/wind is predicted - and when I have to be away from the boat for extended time.

The Catalina 30 doesn't have midship cleats from the factory. I added a set of Schaefer T-Track cleats from Defender that allow me to rig spring lines. It's one of the best upgrades I've done to the boat.

Last season I stayed in during the winter and ran 5/8ths lines doubled up over my 1/2 inch lines. I'll also double up if the forecast is for a big storm. I've slept aboard with 50 knots of wind blowing and it's impressive how much force there is on the lines.

I've also found that putting line snubbers on the side of the boat that faces the bay makes sleeping aboard a lot more comfortable as the wind has a chance to build blowing across the bay. I rarely see those strong winds from the land side of the marina.

Stu,
That's a nice solution. I like the fact that the fold down cleats aren't toe stubbers.

What I like about the t-track cleats is the ease of installation. It takes longer to get them out of the package than to install. I guess I'm lucky. With the 30 I'm able to get a good angle from the t-track. I've also got to say they've held up well after two seasons a quite a few storms.

There's usually more than one solution to just about any boat question ;)
