dock line splicing vs. bowline?

Thought I'd add to the "fray"

Whether you splice or knot your docklines in order to make a loop to pass it around a piling, a lot of wear is going to occur where the bitter end passes thru the end of the loop, be that a spliced loop or knotted loop. And you'll increase the liklihood of dockline failure if the bitter end coming out of the loop around the piling does not run fair to the cleat on your boat.

I called the splicer and changed my request for a "big" eyed splice that will fit all the way over the pole so I won't have to thread anything thru an eye. I had originally asked for a small eyed splice and was going to loop the line thru it and "noose" the pole. Makes more sense to have a big eye and place if over the pole, then no line against line chafing at least...thanks
