Dock boxes

I am moving to my new slip in two weeks. The marina does not provide dock boxes. That is up to the slip renter to provide. They give the maximum dimensions at 32x43x63 and must be triangular in shape. I checked to see if the Rubber Maid Deck Box was allowed and they said no.

I've looked around and cannot believe the cost of a dock box. For a piece of plastic, they are going for upto $500.

Does anyone have any info of where I can get one about that size for $100 or less. Thanks

I think I could make one from plywood for less than that.(500) for less then 100 it becomes a DIY project.

I found web site (ecruffmarine.com) that sell plastic dock triangle boxes for 225.00. But the size of them wasn't given, so you can call their number from web site to get correct size to need. I hope this help you.

Brian, I just recently built mine out of plywood. I looked around at a lot of boxes but just could not justify paying that much money.

frank balcer - I was toying with that idea last night. I saw some homemade ones at the harbor and they didn't look too good. Might have to find a carpenter to make me one.

BrianD, I have a simple question concerning the triangle shape. Is the base a triangle or a rectangle? Are there vertical sides on the box? Are they(the marina management) just trying to avoid the "foot locker" look? A flat top makes a great seat for people or a roost for birds.

Making one out of fiberglass isn't all that difficult, especially if you've done any fiberglass repairs on a boat.

OSB

OSB was about 7.5 a sheet at Home Depot/Lowes yesterday... Frames, hinges and such should be well below than $30. A bit of Fiberglass and some colored epoxy... your should be there....

or buy one used from folks who are selling their boats... (If they are selling a boat,then offer for the box??)

Ross, yes the base is triangular as is the location for the box. And you are correct, the marina doesn't want the footlocker look. Too bad RubberMaid doesn't make the deck box in a triangular shape. They'd do well in that regard.

One sheet of 1/4 inch plywood and some fiberglass tape. Build it stitch and tape method and slope the top to shed water. Some careful planning will get you a box for 50-75 bucks even less if you have some of the junk around. Cut the base to size and the three sides. Lay it out like petals on a flower and using cable ties join the four pieces and then bring the sides up and join the edges You can make the top bigger than the base and put it on like the lid on a shoe box.
