Has anyone built their own Dock Box? prices are ridiculous and i calculate you could build a 4' by 2' by 2' sized box with a single piece of plywood and outdoor paint for $70.

many marina's won't let you build a box. On one level I can understand their position. I've walked down docks and seen just about anything used as a dock box. They are many marina's who won't let you build a box or even use anything other than a fiberglass box. On one level I can understand their position. I've walked down docks and seen just about anything used as a dock box. They are liable if the lid flips off in a storm and takes a gash out of that beautiful $400K boat that docked for the night next to the DIY dock box. Granted I've seen works of art worthy of a museum display as well - there are some incredibly talented craftsman out there. If you can build it I say do it. Good luck and don't forget to post pics.

You can buy a patio box from Home Depot or a similar store for less than it costs to build one. Mine was $60 and locks. Plenty sturdy enough and looks like new after 2 years.

We have to buy ours through the marina ship's store. They want to be sure people don't go over board and get something so wide they encroach on their neighbors and don't interfere with carts. They were kind enough to sell us one at their cost. Saved us a little bit.

We don't have to buy from our ships store but we must conform to the specifications set by the marina. If you choose to buy from the marina they give it to you cheaper than the same box at most of the stores and they will install it for you as well.

I bought my 2 (1st one stayed with the old boat) from slip holders who sold their boats so I got real good deals. Check around your marina or try to get the dockmaster to tell you who's selling their boat or not returning to the marina. You may get a good deal!
