For the 2nd time in the last few years, the podium at the Sydney-Hobart has been stirred by a P/S protest that occurred before the last turning mark.

Say goodbye to standing on the podium!

According to the SIs, any Rule#2 violation before the last sea-mark at the start results in a two hour penalty. This is not that hard. P/Ss are easy to see. If it's even close, why carry the the threat of this for 600 miles??? Go ask WO11, who lost first place in 2017.

Man the images from Tasmania are remarkable. Clear from the columnar Basalt that forms the head land turn towards Hobart that the Island was volcanic formed. They had great weather to finish the race. Thanks for the postings.

Remarkable. If not for the 2 hour penalty they would’ve beaten them by 25 minutes. From the looks of the protest it was a pretty trivial P/S, even more so than the WO11 one. Just take your turns indeed. :banghead:

A few years back on the 36.7 we were protested right after the start for a w/l violation. It was iffy and we probably would have beat it, but it was a 66 mile 20 hour race. So we did our spin and didn’t miss a beat. No way I’m sailing that race knowing I might get DSQed at the end.

Two turns would have been a lot quicker than two hours. Ducking would have been even quicker than that. Either would have saved a lot of time in “the room” as well. Fourth would have been better than sixth in any case. Not a smart move.

indeed, the bigger point is that a duck or turn, and you keep your 3rd place finish and get to stand on the podium.

ALWAYS do your turns in a distance race.
