Do you use the in counter trash compartment for trash?

On my H260, there was no in-counter trash option, so I had a small can near the companionway steps. It was okay most of the time, but occasionally spilled in heavy seas.

Now I have this great H36 with the in-counter trash can. On the one hand it will never tip over, but on the other hand, there is trash right next to the food prep area, which doesn't seem all that sanitary. I could use the extra galley storage in that spot, but I also can't think of a great place for a stand alone can.

What do you folks do?

On our 39 the Admiral uses the in-counter bin for storage. Toaster, kettle et cetera. There is additional storage under the bin as well. For sanitary reasons, I installed a small garbage can on the sink cabinet drawer. The door is 1/2" thick so we carefully spec'd things out before drilling and mounting the holder. You need to position things so they avoid sink pipes. She is now happy. With the drill out, you can also mount your paper towel holder, wardrobe hooks, handheld VHF mount et cetera.

We use ours. It is very small but we use wallmart/grocery type bags. We got use to it and it is fine. I don't see any other place for a trash container. Someone on this site made his a little bigger by removing the ring but I don't see any need to do that.

I use the trash compartment

I use the trash compartment on my Hunter 340. It is enclosed and is seperated from food preperation or food storage areas. I use tall trash bags in a wastebasket and remove the trash daily. I don't see any problem with sanitation issues.

We use the heck out of ours. no sanitation issues as it is under the cutting board where all the jetsom is produced anyway.

On our 38, Co-Captain says she'd rather have more storage and a less volume (huge & wasteful says she) committed to garbage. We haven't yet seen or devised a clever revision, so being recyclers we put a plywood diagonal divider vertically in the bin - garbage bags in each half, clipped to the top with spring-type paper holders. One half is garbage, the second half recyclables. As at home, we've reduced our garbage volume by 80%.

Still looking for how the really clever Hunter owners have improved that space...

I think the in counter waste basket on the H34 is a poor option. I prefer hanging the plastic shopping bags from the bulkhead by the nav station. Easy to tie up and I don't forget and leave trash on the boat. They don't tip, spill, or put trash in contact with a surface to be cleaned (i.e. the counter lid).

We absolutely use ours; in fact, it's one of the first features my wife shows anyone visiting the boat!

We use the designated spot our on my 410 when Cheryl is aboard, otherwise when soloing, I place a former plastic shopping bag around a hook near the companion way ladder to locate the bag. It's easier and quicker to access.

I use mine but then again I'm not the type to worry too much about something like that. Besides, most of the garbage is pretty benign stuff - peelings and wrappers. I'm extra careful with anything that might create a problem such as raw meat juices and make sure I get that bag off the boat ASAP.

Wipe down the area regularly with a boat friendly cleaner, wash hands frequently and in my opinion you're good to go.
