A whole lot of regional sailing associations will be holding rendezvous this summer. Will you be going? If so, what draws you to the rendezvous? Do you go to check out the other boats and see what improvements their owners have made? Are you mainly going to see old sailing friends and perhaps make some new ones? Or is your decision to go based mainly on the location and planned activities of the rendezvous? Share your thoughts and be sure to vote in the Quick Quiz at the bottom of the home page. (Quiz by Gary Wyngarden)

None around here

I would LOVE to attend an O'DAY Owners' get-together. Unfortunately I don't think there's been one in my area ( Lake Erie ) in the 8 years since I've had my boats.

Absolutely going to Catalina East Coast Rendezvous

Aug 8-10th this year in Mystic Conn ! Its great seeing all the boats and people, some old freinds, making some new one. The partying ! and seminars and being able to meet the designer and factory people all adds to a great weekend. Not to mention its going to be in Mystic Seaport which is a great location, considering this was once one of the early ship building locations in our countries early years...great museum.....I am very much looking forward to it. (Other Catalina Boats in the Northeast should try to go it'll be great)

The plague of rendezvous

Actually, most rendezvous are held at locations too far away to get to (for me). I would enjoy seeing the improvements AND meeting the people involved with the similar boat as mine but there are so many issues involved with getting to these events that it would be unusual to see my way through the maze and actually attend. My last boat had only one or two other owners in the U.S. so getting together wasn't an option. The boat before that was a smallish Hunter so there was opportunity but never enough time! In any event I have enjoyed raft ups and get togethers whenever I have had an opportunity -- whether I knew anyone else there wasn't an issue. It takes about ten minutes to meet enough people when the excuse to come together is based on a mutual interest.

Watkins Raft-up June 21-29

The First Annual Watkins Raft-up is scheduled for 21-29 June, starting at Deltaville Marina, Deltaville, Virginia. A week of cruises and "fun" races are scheduled, along with gear swaps, door prizes, instructional films, and just good old plain socializing. Ten Watkins sail boats, ranging in size from 23 to 36 feet, and over 30 people are already confirmed to attend. Several people will also be attending, but without their boats and from as far away as Arkansas and Georgia. All are welcome. For more information, if you are interested in participating, go to the Watkins web site at Yahoo.com, or check recent postings at the Watkins site here at SailBoatOwners.com or e-mail Paul L. at lapoints@bellsouth.net

Columbia Rondezvous

I thoroughly enjoy Columbia get togethers. I have been to a couple of rondezvous and we have a luncheon in Columbia Maryland usually in February. Anyone with an interest in sailing is welcome. In fact last year on the Magothy, we had a stink pot join us. (The owner's son was there with his Columbia Sailboat.) I plan on making every one I can this year too. If anyone is interested in getting together with columbia owners, check out the Columbia mailing list on Sailnet for details. There are gatherings all across the country, but I only make those on the Chesapeake. Cam Whetstone s/v C36 - Wolf's Den Baltimoe, Md. USA

Friends on the high seas

One of the most enjoyable parts of getting together on the Catalina rendevous is to renew old friendships and share a common interest - the joy of sailing/cruising.

Our First Rendezvous

We purchased our 2003 Hunter 326 from Norton's in Deltaville in May 2002. Last May 4,2002 my fiancee and I were returning from the Bay Bridge Boat Show and stopped at Norton's Yachts in Deltaville, for their Open House. Carolyn, Ken, Mike, Craig and the whole gang are the NICEST people. My fiancee, who all ready owned a 1987, O'day excused himself to the men's room and when he returned I told him, "Honey, we just bought a new boat, Sign here!" Our boat was delivered July 20th and we were married on the bow July 27, 2002 at Scott's Creek Marina in Portsmouth,VA and sailed up the Bay to Tides Inn for our honeymoon. In February of this year, while attending Norton's Yanmar class, we met lots of other Hunter owners and were told about the RENDEZVOUS. We contacted hsa1 and joined their club since there is not a Hunter Club here in Tidewater or the southern part of the bay. We are so excited to meet other Hunter Owners and find out more about our own boat. See you next month, Wayne & Millie Morris "Irish Fever"

It's a tri-state rOnDAYvous

Mark your calendars -- the metro NYC area O'Day owners (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut) are gearing up for their rOnDAYvous at City Island, NY, and surrounding waters on the weekend of July 18-20. Details are starting to come together, and will be posted on O'Day-related web sites as soon as available. It'll be an informal gathering (no factory sponsorship or involvement), just a bunch of sailors with at least one thing in common: their O'Days. Should be tons o' fun. Stay tuned.

Mead Madness 2003

What draws you to the rendezvous? The greatest people are "Real Boat People" (RBP) and I very much enjoy their company without the need for social trappings. Only after you have run out of discussions about their and your boat do you need to talk about occupations in passing. Do you go to check out the other boats and see what improvements their owners have made? All the modifications and creature comforts are observed and discussed, including locations of where to get the material at the best price. Are you mainly going to see old sailing friends and perhaps make some new ones? Yes, and hopefully meet new ones. Make plans for get togethers later in the year. You may be single handed sailing but you are not alone should you need help with a breakdown. Is your decision to go based mainly on the location and planned activities of the rendezvous? No, but I find it easier to decide if the location is closer rather than some distance. This is the reason that the annual spring rendezous called "Mead Madness" so attracts me. This year we coupled the Las Vegas Bay MacGregor Association Founders' Day Cup Race (open to all sailboats) at the start of the Mead Madness sail.

We Love to Rendezvous

My wife and I have attended 4 seperate rendezvous here on the bay and each has been better than the last. Other Hunters to board, new and old friends, interesting seminars, the Hunter Cup Race, fun activities, and the post race party. Last time (2001) the wx was perfect. We have our fingers crossed for this year. See attached photo.
