Hello all --

The sheave carrying our main halyard in a deck organizer disintegrated on me recently.

I'd like to replace the entire piece if I can find something with the same bolt spacing, because the backing plate is encased in the deck -- drilling and tapping for a new pattern would be a MONSTER deal.

Do you recognize that logo? All that's left is the outline really.

The sheave center-to-center is about 2-1/4" but I'd like to be able to contact the manufacturer (if it's still around) to confirm and maybe for a recommended replacement.

Otherwise, I'll probably just drill out the rivets, buy replacement sheaves and rebuild it.

That would be my guess. Just rebuild it with schaffer sheaves.

I used to have deck organizers like that years ago. Not 100% sure but I believe they were Rutgerson (Swedish made ?). No need to destroy the rivets, jut pup out the stainless screw. You'll find a bushing on which the sheave is installed. Slide the sheave out and replace it with same size. You might have to resize the bushing for the new sheave. good luck

That was the first thing I tried. I took out the three screws, lifted the organizer off the deck, but I couldn't free the bushings.

I tried using a c-clamp to press the bushings out -- no movement. I also tried using a hammer to free them thinking maybe they were seized -- no luck there either.

I just assumed that the bushings were captive between the top and bottom pieces of the organizer and simply don't slide out.

Should I try again? If they slide out, I assume they slide out the bottom.

Before you spend money on this antique, contact Garhauer Marine. The can usually build a unit with the same centers as you presently have and they will give you a 10 year warranty to go with it. There 3 sheave units are about $66.

You might be surprised to hear that I already contacted them. My neighbor (the "guru" on our dock) suggested getting in touch with them. I asked about the spacing on the two three-sheave deck organizers they have listed at their website. Here is what Garhauer told me:

The hole spacing on our 30-DO-TB is 2-7/16" and the 40 series is 3". We do have old style 25 series which is 2-1/8" and 30 series is 2-3/8"

The spacing on the organizer I'd like to replace is around 2-1/4" or 2-5/16" (or 58 mm), I think. So none of those would seem to match the spacing I have. Do I need to ask about customer organizers?

Just in case anyone is curious -- for posterity! -- I emailed Rutgerson through its website about this deck organizer, but it is too old to get a solid answer.

I asked about the sheave spacing and how to disassemble the piece.

Here's the response:

Dear Jeremy,

the deck organizer model you sent a photo of is quite old, and for such an old model, I could not find a confirmation of the hole spacing. But on the more recent model, the hole spacing is 56mm, and usually from one product generation to a new one, we very rarely change the hole spacing, to avoid to have to make new holes on a roof. So I would say that it should be 56mm as well for you.

Again I do not know that article, but I do not think there is any risk of sliding parts, as all the parts should be larger than the bolt hole on the roof, on the principle. But then you will certainly, once you will manage to dismount it, have trouble to replace the sheave.....on our actual models, the sheaves are not removable at all, and I would not even recommend you to try.

It would sound lot more safer and easier to change the whole deck organizer. You can find our different models on our Deck Hardware catalogue, page 38, that can easily be downloaded from our website: www.rutgerson.se

I've measured and re-measured. The spacing is not 56mm, unfortunately.

It is really not a big deal to drill and tap the new holes for a new deck organizer. If you get an old unit to replace what you have will only be putting off what you are now dealing with.

Garhauer did offer to make a custom organizer to match the existing bolt spacing, although I did not get a quote for that. In the end, I just decided to rebuild the existing organizer.

I disassembled the old unit by drilling out the aluminum rivets and prying apart the top and bottom plates. It seems that the bushings and plates are dissimilar metals and had partially bonded. Once separated, I cleaned away the corrosion, sanded and painted the plates, and replaced the two of the three old sheaves with new ones, which I purchased at Defender for around $15 a piece. I picked up a very basic manual rivet gun on Amazon to reassemble.

Total cost: about $40.

Good as new.
