BTW I am a surfer too. Still surfing at 45 years old...... I started surfing in the 60's in SO CAL. Rode some gnarly waves with Hobie Alter, like he's the guy that builds cats. Also Corky Cornell and Bob Englund who later became Freddy Kruger. Knees are shot now. Fair Winds and Full Sails....

Ummm, so you were age 3 or 4 when you started surfing, and by the time you got big enough to paddle out into those gnarly heavies at Doheny, Hobie Alter was in his mid forties! I see. By the way, your pal Corky changed his last name to Carroll before he was seen in the 1964 film "Endless Summer... heh, heh. Better get with the Aricept, old timer... your memory's playing tricks on you.

I disagree with "walk away"

RUN!

I have restored 5 boats in my day. None in as bad a shape as that one looks. New sails alone will cost you $4K min. You will spend at least $10K getting that boat ready to sail. For $10K you can buy a fantastic, ready to sail boat.

Restore project

If your handy with tools and knowledgeable about glassing etc have a year or two and 8 to 10 grand to spend to refit to your liking then maybe go for it as long as the hull and spars are sound.
Failing that walk away now. I bought a boat last year 22 footer and figured on restoring her and having her in the water this July. Didn't happen and while I am about 90% done I'm also 40% over budget.

OK.. but guys (and ladies) .. what the ^%$#^$# kind of boat is it ?? I am curious and have looked the picture over a bunch and can't find a match.. it kinda looks like a lot of boats but the pattern of the ports doesn't quite fit anything I have looked up.. I agree that it is a RUNAWAY kind of boat but we are going to have to rely on Sammy to get a HIN to "make" this one..?? Old Sabre??, a Hunter Cherubini ??, A hunter "kit" with builder's select windows??, S-2 ??
In Puerto Rico, boats are sometimes stored with the keels buried so that a hurricane doesn't topple them from the cradle.. I think that is why she is almost on the deck.. ??

Too bad that no one publishes a boat identification guide like they do for plants and trees. It was built without side decks, the windows are rather squared off and small by today's standards. I would guess at least 30 feet unless the windows are only 2 inches tall, plain as mud on the outside, a large long cockpit it seems. No bow or stern rails and no stanchions. The grass is too tall to see the bottom so we can only guess.

If you know
about plumbing,eletrical,mechanic,fiberglass finishing, and a lot of woodworking, It can be a lot fun,sorry with the folks who disagree with,but only if you really enjoy working in the boat like I do, this can be done a nice project the way you like it .I have done two boat in the past 5years one 32'island packet and my last 34' hunter wich I just sold last year, My 32' I purchased from the recovery,from the bare hull to the sailing day it toke about 24 month I spend around $16,000 but when I finish it no only the satisfaction, I had New boat as well. Ones again if you never built a boat or nether have experience on these thinks I recomend you to think a list 10 times before you enter in a major project..Good luck and good waves

Must be some confusion here. BTW is 45. I am between 65 and death. Started surfing when I was 13 in Oceanside. First board was about 17 feet long and weighed as much as a Volkswagen. County Line, Zuma, Trestles, San Onofre, Huntington. Bob "Freddy Kruger" Englund and I went to High School together In L.A., Graduated 1965. Yeah, Corky Carrol. Sorry about the lapse on the last name. Minds slips sometimes. New another guy named corky cornell. Watch that old timer stuff Sonny! I probably have socks older than you.

Joe, were you living in SD around 1960. There was a guy who built a replica of a Spanish Galleon in his backyard across the street from a friend of mine. Had it hoisted out with a crane. We were in Avalon mid 70's and there it was. Fair Winds and Full Sails...

Have a marine surveyor tell you it's OK. It would be well worth their professional fee.

You can drop the "Hunter". It was added incorrectly by whoever created that sign. Cal 28 is a good boat. Here's a little info about the design Cal 28

One of the greatest things about getting a survey done is you get a complete list of things you will want to do and can objectively prioritize the list. It should cost you a couple hundred and will save you a couple thousand or more by knowing what is most crucial to have done first. Often people jump on what they want to see done with a boat that is pleasing to the eye and still have to address functional items. It can balloon your budget. With a good survey you can sit down with a solid list and rationally prioritize what needs to be addressed and have a great game plan for your boat.

Can't help ya on the make, but it's rare that I see a short keel like that.
Sometimes the most expensive boat is the free one.
After sitting there for 10 years...It should have little or no value.
