Shipfaced

My wife was luke warm about buying a boat when I first started looking. One way that I got her involved was to let her name it. It was a tough decision but in the end it worked out fine. She wanted a name that would make you smile or chuckle when you saw it. Hense the name: Shipfaced. I wasn't so sure I liked it, but ya know she was right! When you tell someone the name of my boat, they chuckle, and ussually smile and say "what a great name". I know its not a courageous, inspiring, or nautical name, but its fun. So we're sticking with it. I have considered that I may just have too many drinking boater friends. Oh well, there are worst things in life. Mike.

Wouldn't Call Her Anything Else

My wife and I were married on November 22, 1999. We were married at the Wayside Inn ("Tales of a Wayside Inn" by Longfellow) in Sudbury, MA. You could not have picked a better location. We bought our 1997 Catalina 28 MKII in August of 2000. There was no doubt as to her new name, "Wayside". Regards, Barry Cohen "Wayside" Hull 505 Lynn, MA bdcohen@mediaone.net

I have until tomorrow

I had named our old boat "Bivalve", because it was a fat little cruiser... looks like a clam to me. Plus I like clams. But our new boat is a bit more graceful, so maybe "Oyster"? I was going to name it "Moque Gelee", which is French for "Frozen Snot", which was Herreshoff's opinion of fiberglass. But I decided this was not only disgusting, but too apologetic to the wooden boat crowd. The boat was called "Dina" by the last owner, and "La Bonne something" before that. So... Electra, Day'O, Weeble... I don't know yet... but I have about 20 hours left to decide! No problem. Rich

For Les Murray...TUDO BAYN

This is an attempt to spell the Portuguese phrase "tudo bem" which means literally means "everything's good" but is widely used in a much more informal context to mean "everything's cool" or "no worries, mate!" or "Irie man!" or "jus' cool" Your boat's previous owner seems to have had a thing for Brazil, which I can't fault, being from Jamaica myself. La Chacharoona

I'm the proud owner of a new 411, named after my youngest daughter. On holiday in Malta recently, Claire (3) was nicknamed 'La Ciacciaruna', meaning (roughly) a small happy child. With apologies to any Maltese people (also Italians) out there, I turned this into phonetic English... La Chacharoona. They are both beautiful (daughter and boat).

time and place

Today we purchased an '84 O'Day 222 with a somewhat sentimental name that doesn't suit our family at all. It needs some TLC but should respond well to some overdue attention. Since I work in high tech, we have decided there was only one name for a boat purchased this summer...Underwater Options. The denaming ceremony many have referenced in this thread can be found at the url in this post. We hope it will bring us luck on both fronts!

It says it all

We have been saving to buy our first sailboat, but we already have the name picked out. "Spare Change" We have been saving our coins for two years for our first boat and it only seems fitting.

Named after a sailor ancestor

My boat is named after a Dutch ancestor of mine who sailed a Bark into San Francisco "Harbour" in August, 1852. I've had ships' captains in my family since the mid-1600's. I thought it would be interesting to have my great, great, great grand uncle's name back on SF Bay after almost 150 years. In the process of researching the name, I discovered that I also share his birthday. Unfortunately, I'm the descendant who gets seasick! And I've found learning Basic Keelboat more to be like Basic Keelhaul... Adrianne s/v Feije

Not a moment's hesitation

The (not so) original name of my sweet boat thru both of the previous owners was "Free Spirit". I have been in marinas where there were AT LEAST!!!! 97 (maybe more) "Free Spirits" of various description... caused my stomach to churn. Fortune favored the easy removal of the insipid, colorless, artless, & unimaginative vinyl not-quite graphics without burnin' my fingers nor my patience too badly. A buffer with some jewelers rouge erased the ugly shadows on the transom and prepped the aft quarters for the new, attractive, multi-color name/logo. Her new name was easy; didn't hafta ponder for a moment. I have long been a fan of Anne McCaffery's "Dragonriders of Pern" series which includes the "Harper Hall Trilogy" featuring my favorite McCaffery character; A young lady, daughter of the head of a fishing village, expert sailor & musician with such a sweet and wonderful personality that everyone who meets her becomes captivated. We held a party for the all-important Vigor de/renaming ceremony which included a number of musicians playing harp, guitar, mandolin, flute, fiddle, bodhran, & didgeridoo. Offering the requisite libations/potables/elixers to Neptune/Posideon "Free Spirit" became.... Menolly. Menolly has been a dream, but we find that we have outgrown her and are shopping for a Hunter 40. When she is sold, one of the requirements/conditions of the sale will be that she is to be renamed in which endevour we will be more than happy to assist. When the new boat arrives, she will, with proper ceremony and circumstance be renamed not Menolly II, but simply... Menolly. Best, Steve S/V Menolly (Newport 33) Quartermaster YC Vashon Island, WA

Bad luck to change names

In Argentina sailors think it is bad luck to change the name of your boat. Then of course women also do not loose their names to marriage. Viviana

Kept the name

Bought a 16' Sciroco fifteen years ago and fell in love with the name AFTER YOU. Kind of corny but then so am I. Considering MUSTANG SALLY for my recently acquired but never named '83 Hunter 22.

Encore! (for a reason)

My current boat, a Cat 25, is called Encore! because I bought her back from friends after a 6 year haitus. I teach theatre and Encore! sounded appropriate for "going around again!". Previous boats were "Molika" (first two letters of wife and girls-Molly, Libby and Kathy), "Gizmo" for a cute little Pearson Tempest, and "Pacifier" which was the 1st name we gave the Catalina, back when kids were small and I wanted a larger boat (the Cat. was to "pacify" me! "Rambunctious" was the name of a first boat, a little Windrose 18. I wouldn't own a boat with a horrible name, or one that wasn't some how "personal"
