Sure, it's your boat... but do you really like its name? Did you carefully create the perfect name for all time, or did you inherit the mess from a previous owner? Now that it's settled in, has another, better name come to mind? What led you to the name on your boat, and if you could, would you do it again?

Nobody's decision but the owner's.

The previous owner of my H34 felt that he was stuck with the name she had. Someone told him it was bad luck to change the name--kind of silly for a scientist. I've had the name of my boat in the back of my mind since I used to kick stones along the road while jogging, and pace off the distance, which I would say was the length of the yacht I'd own someday: my Someday Lady (thanks Bob Seger). A dream realized shouldn't have someone else's name on it.

Allie Kat

While at the Newport Boat Show 3 years ago I was sitting at the helm of a large (40'+) power boat when my then 4 year old daughter Alexandra Kathrin gave me a sweet kiss on the check and ask "Will you buy me this boat daddy, please"? SO when we did by our used 376 we renamed her Allie Kat after my daughter. We also removed everything with the previous 2 names from the boat, burned them and did lots of other traditional rituals acompanied by large quantities of alcohol to ensure Neptune was not to eager to take revenge for renaming her. Not one I would choose but . . . .

is it worth the risk to change it? I have tried unsuccessfully to locate the original owner to find the origin of "Ladylove". It is not offensive to me or my First Mate. And it even comes with it's own theme song. Was it named after that old Lou Rawls' song? I think I am the fourth owner of this 1979 H37C so are we all that superstitious? I guess we'll leave it alone.

It's a personality thing

I find that boat names have to fit the personality of the boat and its owner. My Catalina 36 came with the name Tudo Bayn, which meant nothing to me. I renamed her Ceilidh, which is gaelic for party. Much more fitting to how we use her. I did look at an older Allied 36 ketch with the name Blue Goose. That name seemed to fit that boat well and I probably would have kept that name. Changed it!

Our '80 Hunter 27 was "P.O.B." when we bought her 3 years ago in Havre de Grace, Md. Never did figure out what that stood for, if anything. Maybe "Party On Board" or "Pretty Old Boat". Before launch we removed all traces and renamed her "Airwaves" -- which reflects both my sailing and ham radio hobbies. Jon Zaimes Felton, Del. Sailing out of Cambridge, Md.

Changed it, then kept it.....

My Hunter 28 had the name Blew By You (too cute), when the helmsmans seat was removed, the name became Blew You. Needless to say, I changed the name to Neon Moon and liked it so much that when I bought my 320, I removed the name from the 28 and put it on the 320. Regards. Bruce. Neon Moon

Probably one reason we bought her

I spend two months a year, have for the last 6 years anyway, in Italy and Italian-speaking Switzerland. When we found Avanti, our H336, the name and the boat seemed perfect. Wouldn't change it for any reason. We talked about Carpe Diem as a potential name when we were looking for a boat... but then along came Avanti. Rodney S/V Avanti

Wife Did It

After numerous "discussions" six months prior to my buying our boat on how there would be "No Way In H _ _ _" are buying a boat, my wife came up with the name: "Never Say Never" Now, I can't keep her off of it!!! Bob

And miss all the pomp and circumstance?

Of course I renamed the boat. As Bill first said, you've realized a dream. But just the ceromony, the champaign, the friends...what a blast. Brad

Boat names

I named all my boats, (on #7 now). I don't have enough boats for all the names I'd like. What blows my mind, though, is people who name their boat things like "Breaking Wind". Why don't they just call it "Fart" and be done with it. I guess there's no accounting for taste.

The Name Game

The name of my boat currently is "Karakahl" - (pronounced kah-rah-call), the one that she came with. The previous owner told me that it is Norwegian for "leave your cares". I guess here in the States one could equate that term with our own "chill dude". My mind at that time was so distracted by other thoughts connected with my new toy that I chose not ot worry about another name until something came to me. That was a year ago, and nothing (decent) comes to mind. Besides, the well-done vinyl lettering that came with the boat probably has left a shadow line on the fiberglas, and to tell the truth, the name has kind of stuck with me. As to what I frequently call the boat when I am aboard her, I cannot transcribe here for reasons of that it may be considered objectionable (even obscene and offensive) as well as beyond civility and good taste. Fair Winds all! Stu Timm "Karakahl" (still) 1979 O'Day 22 CB Centerport, NY

LOVE my boat name!

I found the perfect name for my boat, had an artist friend design the perfect logo for it and had a graphics friend design the rest. It's PERFECT! As a matter of fact, if I ever got a tatoo, it would be of my boat's logo! LaDonna

Will change it...

I am really getting antsy here. 3 weeks and 3 days until I finish my degree, about six weeks until I start my job, and hopefully about four months to save up the down payment and choose the boat. A name came to me some time ago, but it is a very special name and I think it should be reserved for a very special boat; if the first boat proves worthy it will get this name, otherwise I will choose a name that is appropriate to the boat & my feelings for her. I wouldn't have it any other way...

Perfect name

The boat has an unpronuncable biblical name. The previous owner inherited it and was supersticious about changing it. Re named the boat after the famous Kipling character, Gunga Din, the water boy. As in You are a better man than I am Gunga Din. It fits.

Descriptive Name

A friend of mine, many years ago, found a dictionary of old, and obsolete words. One word stuck out: Mattoid. The definition is that of a harmless crackpot, or person of dubious sanity. After sailing with friends through New York Harbor, I went out and bought my boat two weeks later. Not the actions of a 'sane' person... S/V Mattoid O'Day 22

The name" WINDARRA"

Last year I bought my boat in Flordia, took it apart and shipped it to California (where I re-commissioned it). I posted my boat transaction on a Catalina 380 web site. Prior to that we had already decided on "WINDARRA" as the name to go with.....I had searched long and hard for the name. Ironically, I receive a congratulations email from another 380 (from the state of Washington) that had the same name "WINDARRA"....The name is from the Australian Aborginies vocabulary that transulated means ---"WHERE TO NOW?" What a coincidence!!!!!

I love the name my son chose!

My (then 7 yr old) named my boat Cozin- pronounced "causin" (because it's like family, like a cousin, but not really- so he played with the spelling and pronounciation) I've had my Cat 22 8 mths now. The previous owner forgot the name (not painted on so I don't think the "bad luck" thing will affect us for finally giving her a painted-on name!) Neat thing, though...finally last weekend a yacht club member rafted up with us who knew the 2X over previous owner & my boat & told me her old name- it used to be "Double D." Ugh! If anyone has kids that watch the cartoon channel- that reminds me of the "Ed, Ed & Eddie show"! Again- UGH! I think my boat's been "redeemed". Plus she's loved alot more now (besides for racing...) Lis "Cozin"
