For sure...

We fly our national flag whenever we are present on the boat. Sailing on the St. Lawrence the Maple Leaf on the transom is a great and colourful way of showing off our country of origin. It goes hand in hand with the port of origin on the transom. They combine to add great character to one's boat. Meanwhile a smaller US flag on the starboard flag halyard shows respect to our US cousins who's waters we often sail in.

Flying flag from the back stay

My wife and I would liked to fly the flag from our C-22. I find that the ones from the backstay seem to look the best. How are they attached and raised? Thanks Dale

To Mike from Knoxsville,

A Vet fighting for that flag and country made it possible for you to sail for the "love of sailing", and kept you free to do it, and all the other freedoms you enjoy. As for "flying it upside down", the same Vets kept you free to do that too. In some countries, you would just be shot.

Second on Honeyman and MelE....maybe Mike needs to

move to Cuba then he might understand how lucky he is to be in the U.S. By the way, upside down flag means need help...in Mikes case it is probably mental help. abe

backstay flag halyard kit

http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|7504|62629|63025&id=166812 buy this or make your own. Flag size... 1 inch for each foot of boat length rounded up to next larger size (34 foot boat= 24x36 inch flag) Your biggest problem will be getting it 2/3 up the backstay. So just put it as high as you can.

Defender online

I was just looking at the kit on the Defender site. Go to the site and put "flag backstay" in the search box. It will take you to the kit. It is about $45.

Now Mike, how dare you exercise that which some of your fellow country men claim they stand for; free speech! Did you knot (Nautical term...LOL) see what happened to the Dixie Chicks, when they had the nerve to stand up for what they believe in! YOU IGNORANT MORAN!

The ugly American?

Is it illegal to fly a flag upside down? If Mike has an opinion that is in protest to his countrys policies is this then unamerican? This attitude like shown here by several overzealous PATRIOTS dwayne abe honeyman and mel are the same that were used during the second world war, against the JEWS!These with they're overboard nationalizim are the very ones who will turn people in to be sent to the gas chambers. Were at the head of the pack in Salem Massechusetts sending WITCHES to their deaths, calling people morons and pukes for exercising their sacred right of free speech freely given by men much greater than you petty people that hate someone for seeing the truth of your brave soldiers dying overseas for another Vietnam and all its propaganda. Hawks? Reagan and John Wayne were HAWKS but where did they sit out the war when many others were dying? It is a great tribute to your country to fly the national flag, and in respect for the Afghanistan war where there were real terrorist training camps it need not be flown upside down. You should endorse his right to do so, or you are unamerican and ugly at that.

To the original question, I do not put a lot of stock into flags, unless they have a reason, patriotism is not a good enough reason for me. I like my country, but I don't get all the big deal about flags. Really, I know who I am and where I'm from, I don't think anyone else cares, and neither do I. Fair winds dude.

Hi John, I always make it a practice to ...

fly my country flag from the starboard stern rail using a fish pole holder. This holder serves other purposes as well, such as for a home made shore tie spool (really works slick), and even on the rare occasion a fishing pole. On our trips to Canada I always fly the Canadian flag from a lanyard that is mounted on our lower starboard spreader. The yacht club burgee goes on the port side lanyard. This Friday we leave for a two month cruise up north to the Broughton Island Group with four other boats. Talk about a case of the butterflies. Terry Terry

Underpants and sails

While I would never make a pair of underpants in an American flag pattern, what would the group think if they saw a mainsail made in one?

Irony

Dewayne, no offense taken. But when it comes to irony Abe and honeyman got you beat all to hell. Most fervent patriots believe only THEY have any rights and everyone else has to agree. ITs a little thing I like to call blind allegiance. Its what led the lemmings over the cliff. THat's why no one mourns lemmings. But Abe wins hands down. I should visit Cuba for a civics lesson. That's rich, as a citizen in the land of the FREE and home of the brave I'm not permitted to travel to Cuba! MY government forbids it! Vietnam, Korea, China, Russia sure but not CUBA. And if I did Abe would you suggest a trip to Guantanamo! Now there's a great place to learn about freedom, democracy and respect for the rule of law. Lemmings! ANd before anyone screams about politics, what do you think a tread dedicated to flags is a sewing circle?

Take this CRAP off line :{

Mike, Dwayne, Black Jack, and the others we don't need to hear this political crap here. *grr You want that sort of sewage to post then find 'yerselves a political board, but NOT HERE ! And a special POX upon Mike for starting this crap - Do you REALLY think you are convincing anyone on here to your point of view who doesn't already think like you ? Come on "get smarter" than that. ok.... off my *box

D

Dwayne Hillier

Yawn

Old Salt, do explain POX? Not to fire a salvot, but if you don't care for my opinion on the topic, voice your own; but don't you dare tell me what I can and can't say on a public forum. Mike gave his opinion...poetic, but still. I think those that ought to take a pill are those that chose to be profain in their response to Mike. Interesting how you failed to mention them by name. If you want to carry on this converstion send me an email, otherwise accept that just becuase some of us may fly the same flag, we don't all sit on the same side of the fence. Fair Winds.
