Do I need a winch on the mast O'day 26

I bought and O'day 26, haven't sailed it yet. I've noticed some of the 25/26 O'days have a winch on the mast for raising the main.

Do I need one for getting the main tight?

It sure helps. I don't know why it wasn't a standard item. I didn't have them on my 25 but I ran my halyards back to the cockpit. It's a subject that's been discussed here before.

I have a winch on my mast and I love it. I never have need for a handle. I just pull on the halyard and get the sail up, then take three wraps around the drum and pull on it. The clam cleat above the winch holds what I've got and I'm able to pull the wraps off the winch and cleat off the halyard on a horn cleat below the winch. You really can't beat it. I've found that the advantages of having the winch on the mast is the speed, the ease, and the power in getting the sail up and set.
The winch on my mast has one other important advantage. It helps in holding my sail slide stop. Of course, if you don't have a winch for the rope, a nylon wire clip will work.

As with RBone above I have mine run back to the cockpit. I love my 26....I got lucky and bought one from a guy in Arizona who took very good care of it.
I am about to replace the swing keel line tube...want to seal the connection of the tube and keel area.

Mast winch for O'Day 26

Yes, I suppose a winch on mast of O'Day 26 would facilitate handling main, but I would not delay sailing until you get aroung to installing one. I had a winch on the mast of my O'Day 23 and never used it. I am 70 years of age and now sail a 1986 O'Day 26 without a mast winch; no problem YET!

You mean the winch bracket right? That came with the Z-190 mast, but I think that Rudy may have that John.
