Do I Have The Right Fuel Filters?

I have a 1983 Yanmar 3GMF in my 1983 H34. After the fuel line leaves the fuel tank it goes to an old Perko seperator and then onto the fuel filter located on the engine. That's it. There's no other filters. Never had a problem with fuel in the four seasons I've owned the boat and some people say if it ain't broke don't fix it but I feel like I'm living on borrowed time with this system. It's been suggested to me that I purchase a Racor fuel filter/water seperator. If I do this do I still need the old Perko in the equation? What size microns should I consider for the Racor? Which would be the primary and which is the secondary filter (Racor or engine filter)? Any suggestions on how to install the Racor is also appreciated. Thanks, Joe Mullee

Ask a colleague

10 microns is the majic number. Two filter systems are better than one. Racors are fine, especially with bowl. Check out the sailboat next door, to see. More on this from experts at Yanmar website.

why not 2 microns?

I have a Racor 2 micron on my 3HM35F. Decided on 2 microns based on "smaller is better". May have to replace it more often, but feel better about filtering out smaller stuff.

I like both

Joe, Our boat can equipped with a 10 micron external to the engine filter provided by Hunter and a 2 micron on the engine itself provided by Yanmar. I recently installed a generator ans their rexommendation was for the same setup. The 10 micron filters out the larger particles and the 2 protects the injectors. I believe this to be a good setup. A 2 micron will clog very much more easily in the event of algae or bad fuel. just my opinion, Mike D
