Do holding tanks have over-side overflow tubes?

Peggy: I know you qualified your comments about east coast No Discharge Zones with the "of any size" criterion, but I believe Herring Bay off the the Chesapeake Bay has been designated an NDZ for some time. Has that changed?

OK,

1. The tank is much smaller than I had suspected. I don't have access to it without taking out some panels, but it appears to be 9" x 30" x ?" -- I can't yet see how deep it goes, will figure that out another day.

2. The tank was over filled and coming out the vent line after all.

3. Ship yard simply rendered the y valve locked in the holding tank direction with a screw in the handle to prevent movement.

4. The setup has a raw water intake thruhull, an overboard discharge line and a line to the holding tank -- y valve is mechanically set to only flush to tank, via a set screw in the lever of the y valve. Fair bit of rust staining and corrosion on the thruhull valves, as seen in photo below--will clean them up and reassess their viability, however it looks like they are fitted to the hull with plywood. After I clean up this compartment I'll be able to see if there are occasional water leaks. Everything looked dry at first glance.

5. Jabsco flushing mechanism, I think I saw some paperwork indicating the potty as a Raritan, but I'll have to confirm that later.

Might be easier to install a tank monitor than dismantle the cabinetry to place a light in the tank compartment to aid in seeing the fluid level.

Here are some photos for starters.

I have added vegetable oil in the bowl to lubricate the soft components, and have added some tank treatment (don't recall what it was, it was there from PO). That's all the maintenance I have done (to the head at least ;)) since purchase.

Does this look like a Raritan?

You'll wish you had a Raritan, that's a Jabsco, or so says the label.
While watching the Blue Whales about 2 miles out Friday we crossed an obvious line of "fecal discharge". Admiral was incensed and wanted to notify CG, I explained that I believed the whale was the offender (no TP) and we couldn't identify which one in court.;)

I agree I would change to proper ball valves.

The rust you see is not from the bronze valves though.

No embarrassment, Woody-- I am a neophyte, that's the way the boat came, I have a small (very small) budget, but am enjoying building my skills as I figure out these systems. In fact by the time I have tripled the purchase cost of the boat in maintenance and repairs I will be nearing some sort of competency, I hope! I have read that gate valves are a no-no, so they will be on my next pullout schedule.

Heading back now to see about measurements and find some manuals on the toilet if they exist.

Thanks all for clarifying that the pumper being a Jabsco means the whole unit is also Jabsco -- for better or worse, a Jabsco!

To be continued...

Toilet is a Jabsco...a fairly old one.

You might as well throw out the manuals for any other toilet...'cuz there's no point in keeping manuals for equipment that's no longer on the boat.

Jabsco isn't a very good toilet...but it's what you have. So as long as it still works and isn't leaking water into the bowl, lubricate it, replace the joker valve and call it done as far as any TOILET maintenance is concerned. Just don't put any MORE money into it than the price of a joker valve. But the corrugated hoses I see in your photos really do need to go...among other VERY good reasons, they have to STINK!

Warren... Yes, Herring Bay IS an NDZ...the only one on the whole Bay except for a few marinas who don't know any better. And compared the entire FL Keys, all of Narragansett BAY, all of CT's coast and most of the waters of MA, ya gotta admit that Herring Bay is definitely on the small side.

What hose brands/types and which Joker valve?

Turns out the tank calculates out to a 7 gallon capacity. I thought I was looking at the upper half of the tank, and that there was more below. Nope! The panel where the observation port is marks the entire tank length and height (16" long x 8" high x 12" deep). I expect I could place a larger tank in the cavity in a vertical orientation ( perhaps 16L x 16H x 12D)--add that to the wish list perhaps (or to the next boat's list!)

Thanks for looking at the photos and commenting on the hoses. Looking at the SBO Store, what hose brands should I be looking at: Sealand (plus), Trident, or Vetus? any to avoid? For that matter, should I replace those hoses now or wait until on the hard and replacing the thruhulls? That may not be for another year though.

Regarding the Joker valve, I see that Defender has them for Jabsco, by I didn't see any model markings on the toilet to identify which of the two joker valves I would need. Any ideas how to figure this one out?

Jabsco only makes one manual toilet...

So you only need to know "Jabsco" to get the right one.

Hose: Trident 101 or 102 (identical except for color).Trident Marine: Sanitation Hose

And you might as well put a decent size tank in there too...no wonder you keep overflowing out the vent! Ronco Plastics: Ronco Plastics makes TOP quality tanks for a very reasonable price and have more than 400 shapes and sizes, over 100 of which are non-rectangular...we'll find one that'll work for you.

None of this has to be done on the hard...and the sooner the better.

Any chance you can squeeze a new toilet iinstead of just a joker valve into your budget?

Also, for what it's worth, a long time ago we learned a simple rule: Nothing goes down the head unless you have eaten it first. All paper and other waste goes (carefully) into the trash... PS: I don't care which end of you it comes out of, as long as you swallowed it...P

1. Knock the screen out of the vent thru-hull....

2. Back flush the vent line every time you pump out. . ..

3. Stop overflowing your tank.. .

[4] and STOP blaming your neglect on women's use of TP.
Ma'am,

1. The screen is a small saucepan-sized colander-like, integral first stop for stuff inside the holding tank. I am not sure of its purpose, but if a child was to somehow flush a diamond ring on GOODTRADE, it would end up held inside this trap, inside the holding tank. To access it, on must remove twelve or so bolts and a plexiglass view port on the top of the holding tank. This is not a screen on the vent thru-hull.

2. The ventline on the P-31 is on the bow of the boat, about two feet above the waterline and maybe a foot below the deck. That said, there is no easy way to back flush the vent line. However, adjacent to the pumpout port (ther place to put the suction to the tank, there is a standard gardenhose-like female fitting to flush the tank. I do not know if this goes ahead of the screen or to the bottom of the tank, but last time I used this inconjunction with pumping, the results were quite brown for sometime of the process. So I agree, backflush everytime.

3. I can assure you that I have no-intention of overflowing my tank. In fact, as noted, we typically pumpout before we leave and typically while we visit a new port. However, try as I might, sometimes the crew, unlike the skipper, are not full of sh** as they use the head at their leisure. Sometimes, while on the water, the tank fills.

[4] I can also assure you that I was NOT blaming anything on women's use of TP. Rather, I was simply noting the occurence of a rather different issue having to do with tissue. If I had a toddler aboard and his mom flushed babywipes, and I found the undigestable wipes caught in my trap, I would explain that occurence in the same factual manner.

Peggy,

I see that Defender has a Raritan "Compact Design PHC Toilet" on sale right now for $199.99, states: Raritan's new PHC combines the small foot print of the popular Compact II toilet with the power of the PHII pump. Ideal for small sailboats.

I'd still have to budget for this, but at least its not as expensive as the rest.

Comments?

Go for it.

Best manual head anywhere, anytime.

I recently purchased one, waiting for my BMW (me!) to install it.

You should also check out the price here from our kind website hosts.

Thanks Stu,

I checked SBO first but looks like the other just has a great sale price right now.

Still not sure if it's in the current budget however. How often do $100+ sale prices pop up? I'm guessing this is a rare price.

I'm not experiencing problems with the existing jabsco toilet, it was just a suggestion to replace it since they aren't that good. It may be that in a couple of years we may upgrade to more boat.

That's a GREAT price, even better than the "conversion" on sbo.com, for the best manual toilet in its class...so grab it while you can, even if you can't afford all the rest of the plumbing right now. But check their price for Trident 101/102 hose too...any price that's enough below $7/ft to notice is also a deal.

Re: Go for it!

Peggy,
Thanks for the confirmation of this being a great price. I will encourage anyone to jump at it while I mull it over a bit longer--finances not agreeing right now. I'd love to jump on it but there are other issues both boat and home wise right now that are taking precedent--even with this being such a good deal.
