Hey there,
I built a wind turbine a while ago and currently have it setup on my sailboat. You can see my posts on the thread linked below if you want to know more about the specifics of construction. Total cost was in the $200 range, and at least in the PNW it's been plenty windy enough for its purpose. Good luck if you decide to go for it, and I'd be curious to know how it turns out.
Jeff

PS - Your selection of electric motor is more important than pretty much all other elements of the turbine, so be sure to research it well beforehand. You want high volts/amps for the lowest RPMs you can find, which is why I went with the Ametek 30.

i have a motor i was given by a friend as he left for cruising and he told me is a wind generator motor. i need to know how to put it togethr so i can annoy my neighbors nd produce electricity as the places i intend to cruise have large air flow in rapid manner.....so, my friends, please tell me how to make this innocuous THING turn into a usable item for generating electricity, as many days are now veryshort and not sunny and my panels are inadequate, despite the fact i have more than 7 amp hours plus 130 wtts incoming in full sun. and our wind factor is definitely in need of harnessing.....we get up to and including 90+kts in winter storms here.
