Powder coating will not last long on a winch drum, unless of course you don't use the winch.......;)

Move to Oilberta. Your winches will last forever. :) (Sorry, I couldn't resist)

Just to let all know that I (original poster) am still following the responses.

Maine Sail, certainly re-chroming would be the way to go. From what I can determine, not any places near me just to take the drum in an pick up later. And one in the South Bay (I'm in the north) that I did speak to a few years ago was reluctant to price until I pressed for just an guestimate. Don't remember exactly what the response was, but certainly was way way different than $60. But yes, I will check out your suggested Hemmings and others.

From the responses, seems that powder coating probably won't have the durability needed for winch duty. I seldom use the "offending one", but also, I don't want improved appearance to be strictly ornamental either.

Still not willing yet to abandon the concept. The powder coating sprayer is still unopened in the box, I've saved the receipt, and the HF store is on my frequently driven path only a few miles away. On Monday, I think I will call directly to a seller/specializer of powder coating paint (hundreds of types and colors) and ask for their opinion.

If I go ahead with powder coating the winch, I'll use it rigorously on a few outings and report back.

Thanks all!

replate

Having the ability to powder coat is nice to have around. It has it's place, and is generally much more weather resistant than paint. It's like a fine coat of plastic. Plus, overspray is powder that unless baked in an oven will come right off.
Chrome places aren't everywhere because of the health and environmental concerns. It does make a difference who does the work and how well they prep the part. Results can be nearly as good as new on car parts.

Yeah Rardi, if it's affordable to keep, I would have to try it on something. Besides, we need to know how well it works, even if the winch doesn't work out.

I nosed around earlier, and sending it off to one of these 'big time' platers might be the ticket. Volume?

A thought..

The little powder coat rig for home use is a cool toy. The mess from spraying the powder is worse than cutting mdf, but the $20 toaster oven does a good job. While it's not for everything, it is a useable solution.

Re-anodizing isn't a good option though. Be aware also that if you anodize things that have tight tolerances already they may not fit when done. So very close tolerance things like machine screws and threads or allen key sockets should be masked off or they have a possibility of not fitting when done.

Ive got a pair of barient/barlow #23 bronze 2 speed winches They are not self tailing but Ive got a couple of jam cleats I installed next to them and that wokrs fine for me. I bought em used about 20 years ago I figure they are at least 30 years old. They are not pretty but they are dependable and bullet proof I dont know of anyone that ever painted or coated a winch in over 50 years of sailing. If you are not happy with the appearance of your winches
you might consider winches that are not self tailing They cost a lot less
