Hey All

I'm starting a new thread here so I don't hijack HollyWeirdo's V17 thread. If you have been following that thread you know he is considering ideas for different portholes. And that got me thinking that it shouldn't be too hard to design and build your own opening portholes.

So... anyone do this sort of thing before? And do you have plans you could share... or photos?

opening portholes that don't leak? for less than 40 bucks????

$40 bucks is good... but usually they are several hundreds of dollars. I'm restoring a Rhodes 22 and when it comes time to replace the portholes... .... well I'm guessing I won't be able to find $40 portholes... but if I can I'll buy them. ;)

I'll be glad to critique the end result. Sometimes these projects seem to forget the value of time. Even at this stage, we are giving it some of our precious, fleeting time which has no replacement. In the end, a set of portlights from ebay or a marine salvage company are going to really look cheap when the time factor is accounted for.......just saying:)

Do check out that beckson outlet. They said they have plenty. The ones for 33 that I got say they have machine damage however the guy said they could pass as new. Comes with screens, gasket, and trim ring. You could get them now and wait till the time is right to install.

Are we talking about plugging a big hole in our hull with something we designed and built in our garage??? ;^)

Good on you if you can pull that off. Me, I gotta stick with proven technology.

No I managed to pick up a Rhodes 22 for a song this past fall

... the hull is sound but all of the interior must be pulled and redone. And the ports are brittle and several are damaged. So...

I've restored 4 boats in bad shape before so... I know what I'm getting into. However I have never go as far as Holleyweirdo did on his V17... Not sure I want to pull the deck off

The ports on the starboard and port side of the Rhodes are (at present) deadlights and the two facing forward are opening portholes.
